Once Savana entered the house she followed had dad to her old room where he put her bag down and gave her a hug.
"How was the trip?" He asked in his deep voice.
"It was okay thanks" she replied politely.
"I'll leave you to unpack. Your mom will be home shortly"
"Mmm" She mumbled as he walked out.
Her room still looked exactly the same. A large window let in reddish evening light onto her brown carpet and her light blue bedding that faded to white the further it went down. A gray desk stood opposite her bed where her laptop once stood with photos of her and her grandmother and the few friends she did have in high school. Now that those were gone the desk stood empty that would have been collecting dust, if her mother ever allowed it to collect dust. Her bedside tables were just as bare and empty. She sighed and opened the cupboard that stood next to the desk; it was empty too apart from some of her things that she had left behind in a small box where her shoes should go. Lazily she unpacked her clothes and stuffed the empty bags under the bed. Her mind was too numb to think and all she really wanted to do was cry until she ran out of tears. She tried her best to hold it back. There was a light knock on the door.
"Yeah?"
The door opened and her mom walked in. She was a beautiful woman for her age. Her long bleached blond hair that was mostly extensions hung at her waist and her body curved in all the right places. She was short and was just a little taller than Savana but her heels gave her 5 extra inches. She sat down on the bed.
"You have really let yourself go, my dear"
"Hi Mom" she replied ignoring the comment, and continued packing away her clothes.
"I do hope that you plan on putting something nice on before dinner."
"I'm not hungry" she replied blankly.
"Teresa did not cook all day for you to be ungrateful"
"I'm tired Mom. I just wanna sleep"
"You can sleep after dinner and that's final"
She felt too numb to argue with her and simply nodded her head.
Her mom continued speaking but she simply nodded every now and then to make it look as if she were paying attention. She slowed down on the packing away so that she wouldn't run out of clothes to pack away too soon as she dreaded sitting still to allow her mind to start working. Eventually her mom left after picking an outfit out for her and placing it on her bed. The door clicked shut and Savana was once again alone. Her phone startled her out of her reverie when it started ringing on her bed. Without checking who it was, she muted it and continued folding. When she was done she put on the clothes that her mom had laid out for her and she headed to the dining room. The house was as quiet as it always was with only the distant chatter of her parents to fill the halls. Of course they weren't chatting with each other because like always, they were both on their phones.
She entered the large living room filled with natural light from the floor to ceiling windows; the room was just as stylishly decorated as the rest of the house. It felt more like a show room than a living room.
"Now that's much better, although I do wish you had done something with that hair of yours" her mom said scrutinising Savana after she was done on the phone.
"I think you look beautiful either way sweetheart" her dad replied.
Savana wasn't used to wearing dresses and she felt out of place and uncomfortable. She fiddled her fingers at her sides. Her hair was loose and draped carelessly over her shoulders. She fell down onto the couch closest to her and relaxed. Her mom and dad both sat on the couch opposite her.
"Who was the boy you arrived here with?" her dad asked.
"He's a fr-" she paused "a guy from school. He was heading this way so we thought it would be cheaper to go together. And I didn't really wanna drive alone"
"Well if you lived closer you wouldn't have to"
"Mom, none of the schools here offers what I wanna study" she replied frustrated.
"And for good reason"
Savana gritted her teeth and made her hand into a fist. "Well I'm sorry that I'm such a disappointment"
"What? Why would you say that?" her dad replied shocked, sitting forward on the couch. "You are not a disappointment. We're both very proud of the young lady you have become"
"Maybe you are dad but, I know for a fact mom would trade me in for a corporate sell out if she could" She snapped
"How could you say that? I only want what’s best for you" her mom replied
"But you don't want me to be happy, right?"
"I want you to be able to take care of yourself"
"I can take care of myself Mom"
"How would be able to if you can't guarantee a constant income from a steady job?"
"You don't think I'm good enough do you?" she tried to swallow the lump that had reappeared in her throat. Her eyes burned and her heart raced.
"I hope that one day I'll be more supportive of my kids" She said weakly.
"Sweetie" her dad said shocked. "We will always support you"
"Like you are now?"
"Is it wrong to want my child to have a good life?" her mom replied angrily
"How is never paying attention to your only child a good life"
"What are you talking about? We have given you everything you could ever want" her mom asked.
"Yes but do you even know me?"
"Of course we do"
"Really? Then what's my favourite colour?"
"W- well that’s beside the point"
It was then that she realised that Nash knew more about her then her own parents. Feeling like was about to explode she started to get up when the door bell rang.
"I'll get that" her dad said awkwardly
He got up and left the room. Savana cleared her throat and stood up.
"Savana wait" her mom said softly
For a moment she thought her mom might actually some something nice to her but instead she walked past her to where her dad was standing. She turned around to face three people. On the right stood her dad and on the left her mom, in between them was a young man that seemed to be her age. His short blond hair was neatly gelled into a comb over. His blue eyes felt like they were burning through her soul and his magnificent smile sent chills down her spine. He looked nothing like Nash. He looked the complete opposite in fact; he didn’t have the same kind look in his eyes or the warm feeling surrounding him. All he had was that smile that seemed almost hypnotic.
"Savana this is Alekai" her mom placed her hand on his shoulder "He'll be joining us for dinner"
