Exceptional post!

I had planned on getting bees setup a few years ago and it just keeps falling to the bottom of the list as I've been working hard on hugel mounds, soil building and all the other things going on -- this up coming year is the year for sure.

@preppers, Thank you kindly, that means a lot and just feels good. :-)

Great series! My neighbor keeps saying he'll give me a queen if I get my box ready! Going to use your plans for the Long Lang!

Exciting! Look for the next post on Sunday. I'm going to install my bees this weekend. Right now they are sharing a long lang with another colony - like a duplex apartment.

Let me know if you need help or clarification.

A quick question, can I use any old scrap wood I've got laying around?

Sure, any wood should work. Even plywood, but it tends to rot quickly unless the paint job is perfect.

Thanks. I had never heard of the @Originalworks bot. This link explains how it works for anyone else who might want to use it.

Very useful post. I'm just starting on my journey in beekeeping.

I've seen a lot on the web about the Flow Hive. Any thoughts on those?

I have not tried to the Flow Hive. It seems like an expensive and complex solution to a simple problem. The initial hype was very intense until the knock-off versions came on the market. If the knock-offs are cheap and get good reviews then it might be worth a try.

I like the crushed-comb honey that we make. It has more pollen and wax aroma than extracted honey. I'll post a video of a harvest the next time I find some ripe combs.

It's good you are sharing this information. You are right, a lot of people are hearing about bees in the news now. I remember the first time I heard about colony collapse disease, I didn't think much of it at the time, and then I saw the movie Children of Men and it made me think more about "what if" scenarios. If bees disappear, can that happen to humans as well? What will it mean for food production?
Have they been able to learn exactly the cause of colony collapse disease is yet? Is it pesticides or GMO's?

Thank you for sharing these tips to build the hives with detail and images. Have you written a book for newbies, or is there a book that you recommend?

I will Resteem this post for the preppers community.

The two most likely culprits in the CCD problem are neonicotinoid pesticides and viruses spread by mites. I thought we were turning the corner on the mites, but my brother just reported that his hives have the worst infestation he has ever seen.

It doesn't seem like we are headed toward a honey bee extinction. The most likely outcome is that pollination contracts and honey prices will rise and beekeeper's incomes will fall. The bees will figure out how to survive on their own and we will have to relearn how to take care of them if we want them to do our pollinating for us.

I am not really into bee keeping, but useful information is useful information. You never know when you may have a need for it, and if you have never seen the information, then you may not know you need it. Thanks for the education, and bee on.
