Hey everyone

Because I think this is an excellent question to talk about...

Academic Life:

Well, from childhood I have always heard from my parents about school , colleges and universities and about top results ... bla bla bla... My parents always told me , that I have to get good marks , have to be topper and it was a race. My mother always worried about my studies , about my mark sheets because it was really meant to her. As a obedient child I followed my parents word and go with the flow. That time I have no idea about virtual life or you tube because I think it was not there that time... I am talking about the year of 1996 and that time only we have television, no mobile phone , no internet nothing. Only book , only school and only report card which is mark sheets. I passed school and college with good marks and then I started my graduation journey into university.

My subject was Architecture which is really vast and creative subject with passion. That time I realized that teachers just gave us the basic idea which is not enough for architecture and we have explore more. I started using internet and started to learn my first software called Auto Cad for drawing. Well, there was an academic course on AUTO CAD but it was just basic. I learnt that software mostly from YouTube specially some feature and icons.

Youtube :

After graduation I got my certificate and career started. Real life began and I realized I need more more skills , need to learn more updated softwares. Now where to go?? University !!!! Friends?? Colleagues?? Well , it was youtube where I learnt another software called Sketchup to increase my 3D skills , after that I learnt V-ray , Photoshop from YouTube...

Well, I have certificates from university, I have knowledge of Architecture but I updated myself, my knowledge from Youtube , I have increased my skills by the help of YouTube. Well, in some cases, University degree , certificates matter which is kind of prove that you are not illiterate , you are educated.. That's all ... I am not against on certificates , schools because we learn something , we learn a lot and become educated but your skills also matters...

Another example, I want to share with you. I have learnt make-up (cosmetics world) from Youtube, I don't have any certificates , no academic background , I just followed some youtube videos and also I learnt video editing from youtube... I developed my skills , I increased my knowledge into different sector... I believe my work , my skills and my portfolio will describe who I am , certificates are my backup...

I feel certificates are those papers which are kind of prove that you are educated , but from Youtube or by watching videos you can learn something new , can increase your knowledge and develop your skills..

I think people seriously underrate the importance of self-learning... everyone assumes University is everything, but it can be so expensive that the cost just can't possibly be worth it.

Absolutely, specially if you want good official job they want to see certificates.. I agree with you because some universities are too expensive...@urbangladiator

I ended up with a lot of education. Something like 6 - 8 years of college/University. By the way there were no computers back then. When it was all completed I realized that one of the biggest things I learned was how to learn and where to go for more knowledge.

I then got my first job within my career field and realized I had a lot more to learn... So I continued my education through home study type courses and encompassed that in my work.

Now with the Internet as you experienced there is so much available on line and you can usually work at your own pace. I may not currently work in my career field, but now I have the opportunity to learn so many other things on line.

Very thought provoking post. Got me reflecting back over the years of my education. Thank you for sharing.

Well, there is no end of learning.. You learn everyday something new , and youtube videos helping us a lot to learn everything so easily even you can find any technical or any kind of solution from youtube. That's why I always think I have to go long way and still now I am learning.. Thanks @r2cornell for sharing your journey and experience with me.. Truly appreciated...

Ah its so good we can learn stuff like Photoshop etc from youtube. My Dad was (is) a draftsman and he updated himself from pens and paper when Autocad came out and taught hjmself.. no youtube then. Youtube is such a good supplement and addition to uni, you are right!!

Nice combination @priyanarc Yes, youtube is PERFECT for updating the structural groundwork laid at university - having BOTH is a real luxury.

Online learning is a vast world. You can learn anything you want. But certificates should be always there to back you up, for your living and earning.
Youtube is okay for some certain areas, but you will never prefer a self-learned surgeon, law year or even an architect to deal with your matter. Right?
