PROCRASTINATION AND WAY OUT
Great Minds,
Let us look at one thing that stop us from that goal, from that achievement, from the mark we once set for ourselves. It is no other than procrastination. I will do it later, I will write the post when I wake up from sleep. I will, I will and it continues till we do it no more and finally we become unsuccessful. The Bible said a little folding of hands, a little sleep brings a man to poverty.
WHAT IS PROCRASTINATION?
Procrastination is from a Latin word that means to forward till the next day. By way of definition, procrastination is a act or habit of putting off, delaying or postponing a set of tasks that ought to be done. It is the avoidance of doing a task that needs to be accomplished.
Procrastination is a challenge we have all faced at one moment or another. It is as old as humans, in fact it is inherent of man, we have been struggling with delaying, avoiding, and procrastinating on issues that matter to us. It takes a wise man to recognise and deal with procrastination. As a matter of fact, the major difference between a poor and rich, a failure and the successful is that the successful takes action now without delay while the failure, the poor puts off, delays and postpone taking action, always waiting for a convenient time that will never come.
Yes, the reason most people fail is procrastination. Now is the best time to be alive and productive. If you want to make an easy job seem difficult, just keep putting off doing it. Joseph Newton said, "A duty dodged is like a debt unpaid; it's only deferred and we must come back and settle the account at last."
What holds people back? Is the word 'about' there are those of us who are always about to live. We're waiting until things change, until there's more time, until we're less tired, until we get a good job, until we get a promotion, until we settle down, until, until, until. It always seems that there is some major event that must occur in our lives before we begin living. One of those days is really none of those days.
Do not allow idleness to deceive you; for while you give him today, he steals tomorrow from you. Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal waiting of an uncompleted task. One "today" is worth two tomorrows. What the fool does in the end, the wise person does in the beginning.
HOW TO OVERCOME PROCRASTINATION
The one simple act against procrastination is to start right away, to act now.
However, there are easy steps that will help to start and act without delay. These include the following;
Recognise that you are procrastinating
Find out why you are always procrastinating
Take anti procrastination strategies, such actions should include;
- Commit to the task. Focus on doing, not avoiding. Write down the tasks that you need to complete, and specify a time for doing them.
Promise yourself a reward and make the Rewards of taking Action More Immediate.
Make the Consequences of Procrastination More Immediate.
Act as you go. Tackle tasks as soon as they arise, rather than letting them build up over another day.
Design Your Future Actions and follow up putting time frame and check meter.
Minimize distractions whenever you have a task to do. Turn off your email and social media, and avoid sitting anywhere near a television while you work.
Make the Task More Achievable. Design easy ways of achieving a set task and make it enjoyable.
Ask someone to check up on you. Friends or family member you believe in. A mentor preferably.
Be Consistent. Continue in your strategies and make it a routine that must be achieved.
