in #genesisproject7 years ago (edited)

Please read my last two posts on child's development Stages of Child's development: Growing together and my adolescent child has changed both socially and emotionally: what can i do to help my child control his/her emotions.
Today, I want to write about Erickson's stages of development from infancy-adult.

STAGES OF SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Social emotional development helps a child in what he will become in life by teaching proper reactions to emotional matters. Social development is about a child's ability to cooperate and play with friends and families, paying attention to elders and making reasonable changes. Emotional development is about learning how to understand and control emotions. Now in 1956, Erikson said that socialization processes has eight stages and he formulates the eight stages of development. The first four stages deal with early childhood's emotional and social development while the remaining four stages deal with adolescent and he named these stages "PSYCHOSOCIAL CRISIS".

Erickson's Stages Of Development

I. Learning Basic Trust Vs. Basic Mistrust {Hope}
Age: Infancy- 1½

  This stage is the beginning of the child's development where the child is loved and nurtured then the child develops security and a basic optimism.
  The child if badly handled develops insecurity and he becomes mistrustful.

II. Learning Autonomy Vs. Shame {Will}
Age: 1½-3.

  This occurs during early childhood. The well-nurtured child emerges from this stage sure of himself and proud rather than ashamed. The child who lacks parental care will be stormy self and stubborn.

III. Learning Initiative Vs. Guilt {Purpose}
Age: 3-5

  This stage is what Erickson called "play age". In this stage, the healthily developing child learns:
  • to broaden his skills
  • to cooperate with others
  • to lead But an unhealthy child becomes
  • fearful
  • hangs on the fringes of groups
  • continues to depend unduly on adults
  • IV. Industry Vs. Inferiority {Competence}
    Age: 5-13

      This psychosocial crisis is called " school age". In this stage, the child learns to master the formal skills of life.
  • relating
  • progressing from free play to play that may be elaborately structured by rules
  • mastering and reading books The child who, because of his successive resolutions of earlier psychosocial crisis is trusting and full of initiative will learn easily but the mistrusting child will doubt the future and the shame and guilt filled child will experience defeat.

    V. Learning Identity Vs. Identity Diffusion {Fidelity}
    Age: 13/14 - 21

      The child learns how to answer satisfactorily. Even the best-adjusted of adolescents experiences some role identity diffusion: most boys and girls experiment with minor delinquency, rebellion flourishes. During successful early adolescence, mature time is developed, the child acquires self-certainty. At this stage, the adolescent seeks mentorship (someone to inspire) and develops a set of ideals.

    VI. Learning Intimacy Vs. Isolation{Love}
    Age: 21-39

    The successful young adult can experience true intimacy.

    VII. Learning Generativity Vs. Stagnation {Care}
    Age:40-65

    This stage demands generativity, in the sense of parenthood and in the sense of working productively and creatively.

    VIII. Integrity Vs. Despair {Wisdom}
    Age: 65-older

    If the seven psychosocial crisis have been successfully resolved, then the mature adult develops integrity. He becomes independent, he works hard. If one or more psychosocial cisis have not been resolved, he may view himself with disgust.

    I can really identify with the development phase I am currently supposed to be in.

    I happen to come across this in my year one when i took the course Psychology. The point that interested me the most was; Identity and role confusion and Integrity v Despair.

    The former was because it actually appeal to my age bracket and i had to work my arse out to figure out my identity. It was indeed helpful, and i know that this will e helpful to those who just came across it for the first time.
