Wendigo: North American Folklore

in #folklore6 years ago

The Wendigo is a monster of North American folklore that has roots in Native American mythology. Some native american cultures described it as a large, man eating beast, while other cultures believe the Wendigo is a spirit, that can possess man and lead him to indulge in its cannibalistic impulses.

The monster versions of the myth state that the Wendigo is a 15 foot tall, man-like creature. The beast is said to be severely emaciated, with ash-grey skin hanging on his thin bones. The creature is malevolent, and craves only the flesh of mankind. When the monster indulges in a meal of human meat, the Wendigo grows large, making him even hungrier. This cycle of feeding and growing causes another cycle of glutton and constant starvation. Because of this Wendigos are often used as cautionary tales against greed and gluttony, and as a case for moderation.

The evil creature is long associated with winter and famine. In the possession versions of the tale, you are susceptible to Wendigo possession if you and greedy and selfish.

Supernatural the television series aired an episode about Wendigos many years ago. I always think twice about entering forests now.
