The Loveland Frog: North American Folklore

The Loveland Frog is a giant reptilian creature, said to inhabit the area of Southwestern Ohio that is named for. Some say the legend goes all the way back to pioneer days, with origins in Paul Bunyan stories of the past. Others claim the Loveland Frog is a more modern monster, with the tale beginning in 1955. That version states that a local of Loveland saw three frog-like men near the side of the road.

What made these frog-creatures more extraordinary than spotting a regular frog, was the fact that they were about four feet in height, and bipedal. While they have the ability to crouch like a regular frog, they prefer to walk on their hind legs. Some versions of the story, including the original 1955 spotting, state that the Loveland Frog is a magical creature, and is sometimes seen carrying a sparking wand.

In 1972, two credible police officers were said to have spotted the Loveland Frog. Reports vary on this story, but some versions of the tale state that the officers shot at the frog-like beast where they spotted it along the highway, and despite being injured, it coldly starred in their direction before stepping over the guardrail and blending in to the night.
