Animal Photography: 5 surprising facts you didn’t know about snails

in #animalphotography7 years ago (edited)

I really enjoy browsing through my photos in search of a shot that I could use for the Monday #animalphotography contest organized by @juliank and @photocontests and today, it was this close-up of two in-love snails what drew my attention. As far as I remember, I took this cute macro in the Pruhonice Park in Prague, Czech Republic in summer 2015.

As there is not much to comment in this capture (no matter how emotional moment it was for these guys), I decided to do a little research to come up with some interesting snail trivia you might not be aware of. So here is what I found out:

  1. Notorious for its slow motion, the snail has been used as the symbol of the deadly sin of sloth in Christian culture.
  2. It was recently found out that the average garden snail has more than 14,000 teeth.
  3. Snails can be found in all habitats all over the planet – from deep ocean trenches to rainforests, mountains and deserts.
  4. Some snail species can live for up to 25 years.
  5. Largest land snail ever found measured almost 40 cm (16 in) and weighed in 900 g (2 lb).

very interesting picture, best wishes for the contest too!

I really didn´t know. Thanks for sharing :)

You are welcome :) More animal trivia coming soon, stay tuned :)

Snails awesome! They're cute and biologically very interesting.

If I may add a quick fact to your nice-and-funny trivia: the structure where the teeth are is called radula. Depending on their diet, the radula will be specialised. Predator snails have fewer teeth but sharper and bigger, while herbivorous snails have a lot of small teeth :)

Wow, thank you for adding that info! Just checked your profile and you seem to be not just an animal lover but also an animal expert! :) I will keep any eye on your content. Welcome to Steemit, Victoria! :)

Thank you so much! I'm not an expert but everyday I try to learn as much as I can :)

Very interesting! They could live 25 years! Wow! That's crazy fact! Thanks for sharing!

I absolutely adore snails (except for the fact that they eat up the garden, of course!) There's an itty bitty baby snail on my blog, resting on a daisy petal. I think you'll appreciate her. :)

This photo reminds me of a scene in Microcosmos – snails engaged in the most fascinating mating ritual. Have you seen that movie?

Havent seen the movie but your macro is awesome! glad to meet another snail lover :D Thanks for stopping by :)

"Hey! What are you doin' to that snail!"

Very interesting post and a lovely picture, mate. The photo made me think how love comes in all forms and shapes. Very romantic in a bizarre way (I hope I am not the only one seeing it this way....because then something must be wrong with me lol)

Thanks mate and yes, I find this picture kind of romantic too :D As you said, love does come in all forms and shapes! ;)
