Business Booboos and Exceeding Targets

in #business7 years ago

I have been writing a lot about my business lately. I’m finding steem really good for keeping a blog record of what I have been doing, what’s working and what’s not. By writing it down, although, in a rather free-write style, I’m publishing targets which is keeping me mentally accountable. I must put a little index of these posts together as most of them have got lost in the sea of other content.

I made a massive mistake. A big big booboo. But what’s a mistake if you don’t learn something right?

You might remember me mention I moved my LMS. In the process of playing around with new software like a new toy, I accidentally deleted the link between my newsletter sign up form and the database. Obviously, I didn’t realize I had done this. For the last 2 months, I have been collecting no new email subscribers. AKA leads. My free course sign-ups are up. But my main call to actions has been to sign up to my newsletter or sign up for a steem account. Over these two months, my stats show me over 300 people gave their email address and I don’t have one of these. That’s like 300 people walking into a shop and leaving because there is no one to serve them.

How did I miss this? Well, I did know that the signups were down. But as the free course sign-ups were up, I made an assumption people were choosing the sign up for the free course instead. You know what they say about assumption. They are the mother of all fuckups. My new system gives me a graphical representation of my funnels. This was one of the reasons I selected this software. Had I of just looked at the reports I would have seen this. But with the summer months and me not really working. Well, let’s just say I am kicking myself.

On the positive side, I got a nice surprise with my blog traffic for July. Again, I exceeded my 10% month on month growth target. Although the % change in the previous month is down on other months, I was anticipating some seasonality, even though my targets didn’t really account for that. My targets remain at 10% month on month and so the rolling forecast shows I could reach 20K a month by the end of the year.

Growth is looking good, and getting used to new software can be a pain in the butt. Automation can only go so far, and when we have one of those "well that could explain it" (assumption) thoughts, sometimes we need to look deeper.

lesson learned the hard way!
