Wednesday – What is the correct sentence? – Mini contest #11
Hello SteemKids and Parents!
English is full of phrases or idioms that don’t always make sense. Often this is what makes learning the English language so entertaining.
Before we dive into some of them, let’s first discuss the term “idiom.”
Idioms are common in many languages, even in Afrikaans, my home language. For me, they are a fun way to communicate.
An idiom is a phrase or even an expression that often doesn’t make any sense as the figurative meaning differs from the literal meaning. Let me give you a couple of examples.
"Bite the bullet"
Literal Meaning: To chew on a piece of ammunition. (Ouch!)
Figurative Meaning: To endure a painful or difficult situation.
And one of my favorites.
"When pigs fly"
Literal Meaning: Pigs soaring through the air. (Realy?)
Figurative Meaning: Something that will never happen.
Do you know the following one?
"Cut the mustard"
Literal Meaning: To slice mustard that is a condiment. (No ways!)
Figurative Meaning: To meet expectations or perform well.
All that is left is to see if this week’s scramble sentence is going to make sense to you.
It is time for the results of contest #10.
Just a reminder that the answer is sent to the admin of the community prior to the contest.
Now, what is the correct sentence?
Quick and curious, the boy jumped over the fence to explore the garden.
And we had two who guessed the correct sentence! Unfortunately, the first correct answer will be the winner.
The winner of 12 STEEM this week is @mariez!
What a pity that there was no post, as it could have been 24 STEEM.
Congratulations!
