^{Sightseeing in Cape Town}

If there is one thing we like doing as a family it is sightseeing.

Sightseeing is visiting interesting places, famous places or historical places.

Even easier is breaking the word down in two words, sight and seeing.

Sight – the interesting place (normally visited by tourists)
Seeing – looking at (to literally be there and see for yourself)

We might not be tourists in our own country but nothing stops us to learn and explore our country from the viewpoint of a tourist. In fact we’ve come to realize that there are so much to discover. Those things that school history books don’t tell us about.

Have you seen tourists in your country?

They are the ones with shiny faces due to sunscreen, hats on the head and camera’s hanging around the neck. Well, that is us when we go sightseeing.

We do our sightseeing trips, by walking, by car, by bus and even by boat.

Here we are on a sightseeing trip by doing a walk trail in Keurboomstrand.

Keurboomstrand, a small holiday village on the Garden Route of South Africa. It is a 6 km walk there and back and can take anything between one and three hours as it all depends on the tide. Most of the walking is on the beach and if it is still a bit of high tide you have to walk through the ocean which makes it so much more interesting for the kids.

One of our most exciting sightseeing trips was done on the red “Hop on, Hop off Bus” tour of Johannesburg. I live on the West Rand of Johannesburg and one would expect that I know all about Johannesburg. On this red bus trip I saw and got to learn more about Johannesburg in one day than in my entire life. As for the rest of the family, they were totally amazed at what we saw.

One of our favourite sightseeing trips was when I took the kids to the West Coast of South Africa.

This time we traveled by car all along the coastline stopping at the small fisherman villages and visiting old historical places. We truly believe to go where the road takes us.
What we enjoyed most was the singing and games we played while on the drive.

To our surprise we found a street in one of the smaller towns, Vredenburg, with the same name as our surname.

There is a must see on our list of sightseeing and that is churches. Where ever we go look for the local churches. As a family we have discovered over the years that the beauty, the history and the culture of our country is to be found in the churches.
