Gridcoin PR on project forums

in #gridcoin7 years ago (edited)

To create further awareness of Gridcoin in the BOINC community, I have been thinking of ways how to reach them.

An area where BOINC members are regularly checking the latest on their projects are the project forums. By engaging on these forums in a none-intrusive manner, we could generate positive PR for Gridcoin.

Let me give you a few examples of forum messages in the past weeks:

  • In the news section on SRBase, the forum moderator announced the 3 years existence (here), there was even a special thank you to team Gridcoin for our contribution.
→ We could have congratulated the team with this achievement and that we are pleased to be part of the success of the project.
  • After SETI@home started accepting GRC donations, a discussion started between a number members to try Gridcoin (here).
→ We could have engaged in the discussion to offer support in case of any questions.
  • In the news section on Rosetta@home, the forum moderator highlighted the achievement of finding the three-dimensional conformations of 600 families of proteins for which structures had been unknown and thanked all contributors for their participation (here).
→ We could have congratulated the team, highlighting that we are proud to be part of this success.

Especially when we are the first to reply to such announcements there is a good chance that anybody opening the message will also read the first reply to the announcement, which means our "PR" message. With the 3 examples above I hope to have shown that they are not Gridcoin promotion actions but merely celebrating in the success and supporting where we can.

To take this forward we would need to define who and how to communicate on the forum. I would be open to highlight any PR opportunities, as I’m already checking forums on regular basis, but I guess my writing style might be inappropriate to achieve the best possible impact.

I like the idea of forming a connection between ourselves and the BOINC community. It has been an ongoing struggle, and understandably so, to show them that we are here for the right reasons -- crypto still carries the stench of greed and scams and mt. gox, and it probably will for years to come.

I occasionally post in the lounge on the BOINC forums, and have teased our new whitepaper and the ideas behind what Gridcoin could do for computational science and data analysis and BOINC. I think proactively responding to some of the conversations you mention could be beneficial, however I think there is a fine and tenuous line between reaching out a hand and shoving it in their face.

We have talked about this in past hangouts and on slack, and in general I think our relationship is improving and will continue to improve over time.

I can't agree more. The examples which I gave around celebrating success are the least intrusive I guess. Maybe we can test it and reply to a few forum messages to check the reaction?

I'm hesitant only because we did not have the best reputation in the BOINC community for quite some time. = ) Starting slow sounds like a good idea.
