WE MIGHT BE EXPECTING

in #homesteading8 years ago

This is "Daisy" who we hope will eventually be our milk goat.

You'll have to pardon her fur, as she was licking herself and was not notified that we would be having a photo shoot. Before we can milk her, a few things will need to happen, but it looks like the process may have already began!

THE "PROCESS"

The process itself is rather simple:

  • Impregnate
  • Nurse
  • Wean
  • Milk

Technically, you can even skip step number three, as a mother goat can be milked while she is still nursing. Part of the reason that we also have a young buckling with Daisy is that we were hoping one day they would get married and have kids. Here is a picture of the young buck who is currently penned with her.

He is quite a bit younger and smaller than Daisy, but this may not matter much. Interestingly enough, bucklings can "get the job done" and sire the next generation even as young as three to four months old! Although we haven't "caught them in the act" we speculate that Daisy may already be pregnant. Some farmers have been surprised when they realized that a young buckling bred their whole herd!

She has been putting on some weight lately and growing out around the middle in a potentially beneficial way that could indicate pregnancy. We will keep an eye on her moving forward, but if she is already pregnant, then the process has already started! We are still making friends with her, but she is definitely warming up to us.

Hopefully we will have some good news to share later on, and some cute photos of some kids too. This was not only good news for us, but also for @bluerthangreen and @allforthegood, since they have a few does that they plan on breeding in the future. Who knows, perhaps with the arrival of spring we will also have the arrival of some cute kids! Time will tell and we will see, I just wanted to share the (potential) news with you all, and also make sure that others were aware that young bucks could sire the next generation just a few months after birth. You could be surprised if you are not careful!

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Just started with goats a year ago. Didn't want three little cute kids to go to tacos. One was pregnant, my dairy goat. So, now her son is a whether & I have 4. Would like to homestead soon. Have them for dairy purposes and for weed eating. Also, yard art. Thanks for your notation on the age of bucklings becoming breedable.

Good to see your homesteading post once more. It's been a while I last saw it. I can remember even asking u about it in your last post.

Good to see that ur goat is pregnant. Goodluck on that and thanks for sharing.

Learnt some things tho - the steps particularly.

Happy Steeming

I don't know about goats but sheep ewe's [mummas] will cross the paddock to the ram, to save his energy, and back up to make it easier for him.
One of the stud breeders said that the best way to get a good crop of lambs was to tie the ram to the fence.
What a good life rams have.

Thank you for the infonya hopefully can continue to be a motivator for us who are beginners this
