PHOTOSTORY - HOW I FOUND MY FIRST BROADBANDED WATER SNAKE

in #animals5 years ago

What an interesting way to find a snake.

While the end result was me finding a new (to me) species of snake, I went about it in a very peculiar manner, and did some stuff I never really did before. Here's the story; see what you think!

PHOTOSTORY - HOW I FOUND MY FIRST BROADBANDED WATER SNAKE

We did a lot of travelling yesterday. Three states and even crossed the Mississippi River twice. This event happened after we crossed the Mississippi River for the first time yesterday.

While you can cross the Mississippi River and end up in a lot of different states, we actually entered Mississippi. After a while of driving, we noticed some debris on the road...

Soon we came upon a man with his motorcycle parked right in our lane up ahead. Morevover, we noticed that it was on fire, and saw that he was NOT doing a very good job putting it out. Having no extinguisher with us, we soon dumped water on it and pulled off the burning pieces with welding gloves. By this time the brake line and tire were also becoming compromised due to the fire damaged.

Once the motorcycle was taken care of, we noticed that the debris behind us had lit the ditch on fire. We mentioned something to the man on the motorcycle who drove back over and looked at it while we were turning around. He decided to continue on his way so just beeped at us as he passed and we realized if this fire was going to be put out before it got out of control we would have to do it. Smoke was billowing across the road and the dried ditch grasses were ablaze, spreading in each direction.

Next to the ditch was a field of dried soybeans oh, so soon I was stomping on the flames while my workmate began smacking them with a flat shovel. So we put the fire out and began evaluating the debris.

Apparently the man's sleeping bag had been resting on the tailpipe which eventually combusted also lighting on fire his saddlebag.

We're also found a burnt socket set and pill bottle, with pills stuck to the melted plastic. An interesting and peculiar assortment of debris to be sure.

While walking back and forth on the road making sure nothing else was on fire I noticed water in the ditch and soon saw my first broad banded water snake ever in the wild. It almost got away, but it was a beautiful young juvenile specimen.

It's quite a way to catch a snake, but at least it worked, lol. Plus who knows how many people we actually helped by doing what we did prior to seeing the serpent.

Until next time…

Make today special!

Thank you Sir for the VERY interesting story and pictures!!!!

Thanks for being a great citizen, by not only helping the motorcyclist, but by also putting out the fire he left in his wake. You indeed likely helped a lot of people in the process.

You, sir, are most appreciated by this citizen.

Beautiful little snake. My cat Bonnie once cornered a little Florida banded water snake on our living room tile, which we kept in an aquarium for some time, before releasing it back into a local pond.

Absolutely gorgeous.
