RIP CURRENTS
Rip currents pose a dangerous threat to the untrained swimmer and are the cause of many coastal drownings here in North Carolina in the summer time. The first step toward safe beaching is recognizing the rip in the first place.
In the above picture the areas are numbered
1 Shallow sandbar
where there are breaking waves and the wave action is pushing water in toward shore.
2 The shore line
where the inward flow of water needs to redirect back out to see and thus is flowing in the side-shore direction
3 Deep water RIP CURRENT
area wear the water rushes out to sea.
Any untrained swimmer could find themselves swimming in AREA 3 unaware of the underlying current and get pulled out to sea.
If this happens do not try to swim back to shore! Swimming against the current is futile and will wear even the strongest swimmer out. It is much better to swim parallel to the shore line and escape the rip by swimming in to area 1.
