The green pitcher plant is a carnivorous plant with highly modified leaves

in #nature7 years ago

Pitchers that act as traps for prey. The leaves are narrow as conical tubes that rise up to 75 centimeters from the ground, with a mouth of 6 to 10 cm in circumference. Its structure is greenish yellow with noticeable fine veins and above the jar is a circular bell that extends at an angle of approximately 180 °, upwards. The inside of the jar is hairy and very marked with purple veins. The stem grows without leaves and has bright yellow flowers with slightly feline odor. This plant can reach a total height of 20 to 75cm.

Biology. This carnivorous plant is perennial and blooms from mid-April to early June. It is found in areas that are poor in nutrients and has developed its carnivorous lifestyle as a way to supplement its diet. Your body acts as a trap for a wide range of insects, which are digested by the liquid inside them.

Distribution. Formerly more widespread in Alabama, Georgia and eastern Tennessee, in the southern United States, the green pitcher plant is currently restricted to small populations, primarily in northeastern Alabama. It can also be found in a few places in Georgia and North Carolina.

Habitat. The green jar inhabits mainly in the swamps, where there are filtrations, heavy sandy soils, rich in clay. It seems to develop successfully particularly in open and sunny places, where there is little competition.

State. Classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List and listed in Appendix I of CITES.

Threats The green jar plant has suffered a devastating fall throughout its distribution range. The development for urban and rural uses has led to the widespread alteration of the specific marsh habitat for this species. It has also been a victim of plant trade as one of the most popular exotic species among collectors. Currently, around 34 populations of natural origin persist, but they are small and very fragmented, where the majority have less than 50 individuals.

Conservation. The green jar is classified as endangered by the United States Endangered Species Act and there is an action plan for its recovery. This recovery plan focuses on the effective protection of existing populations, since the most important threat to the future of this plant is excessive collection. This activity is prohibited by legislation within the United States and also internationally by the inclusion of this species in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Other conservation measures include the storage of the seeds to propagate later through reintroduction programs.
