Known today as an art form, meditation technique, a way to reach ecstasy and embody fetishes, Shibari [縛り] or Kinbaku [緊縛] (binding and tight binding, respectively), are an ancient practice from Japan that has been running since XV century until this day. It was originally used for immobilization of prisoners by the samurai warriors and its purpose was capture or torture.

The technique used in the practice prior Shibari was highly ritualized and it was employed to capture and immobilize the enemy with the use of ropes in the very battlefield. This martial art is known as Hojōjutsu [捕縄術] and it is taken as precursor of occidental bondage and japanese Shibari. The Hojōjutsu executed by the samurai had three fundamental norms:
❤Prisoner shouldn’t suffer permanent damages
❤Prisoner shouldn’t had the opportunity to scape
❤No one that didn’t belong to this social range should witness their technique.

At this point you may be wondering if Bondage and shibari are the same thing with a different name for each one. The answer is no. Bondage (french word which means slavery or captivity) is an erotic practice which main goal is to immobilize regardless of the used implement (ropes, chains, ribbons, cables, handcuffs or specialized structures used to force some poses, like spreading bars); while shibari only uses rope, which are generally made of natural fibers.

El shibari cuenta con diversos estilos, como el Kotori (Shibari en suspensión), Gote Gasshou [後手合掌] (Atadura de las manos en la espalda con forma de plegaria), el Mata nawa [また縄] (Que se centra en el área genital) o el Teppou [鉄砲] (Atadura en que los brazos se cruzan diagonalmente tras la espalda), entre otros.

Shibari counts with many styles, as Kotori (suspended Shibari), Gote Gasshou [後手合掌] (Hands tied in the back with a prayer form), Mata nawa また縄 (Crotch centered binding) or Teppou [鉄砲] (A binding where the arms cross diagonally on the back) along with many other forms.

La práctica del Shibari debe ejecutarse con sumo cuidado para evitar riesgos como: Abrasiones por el roce de la cuerda, inhibición de la circulación sanguínea o daños en nervios y articulaciones. Es fundamental establecer una comunicación eficiente entre Nawashi y Dorei y tener a la mano tijeras, para cortar las cuerdas en caso de emergencias.

Shibari’s execution needs to be done carefully to avoid risks of: abrasions caused by the rope’s touch, blood circulation inhibition or nerve and joint damage. It’s fundamental to stablish an efficient communication between the Nawashi and Dorei and it’s necessary to have a scissor at hand to cut the ropes in case of an emergency.
