Combination of Words || Ideas Express a Simple Way

If you haven't already heard me talking about phrasal verbs, they're just combinations of words that let you express more complex ideas in a simple way.

You can elevate something, which sounds quite formal and "textbook-ish," or you can pick something up.

You can also maintain pace with someone in a race, or keep up with them.

So what's the big deal about phrasal verbs?

Well, they are the first major division between the vocabulary non-natives learn in school and the vocabulary natives learn as kids!

While non-natives are trying to increase their vocabulary by studying more advanced words in the classroom, native kids are learning to use a limited vocabulary fluently by combining the same few words in different ways.

I see it even more clearly now as a Uncle of a three-year-old, but the reason my nephew can speak so fluently in English is because she's learned to use a few words VERY WELL in many different ways:

Phrasal verbs give you the native way to build a huge vocabulary FAST...

6 words can become at least 9 different expressions:
get in, get up, get over, do in, do up, do over, slip in, slip up, slip over

But this vocabulary isn't just easier to learn, remember and use without thinking in conversations...

It ALSO makes Aristide's speech sound conversational, natural and "native."

He's not trying to sound too formal or advanced, or hesitating to mentally search through all of the complex vocabulary she studied to find the right word for the right situation...

Aristide simply combines the same words in different ways easily and automatically!

This is why I recommend YOU learn phrasal verbs, too, if you want a simple way to speak more fluently and sound more native!
