Art Battle: 2018 Championship Competition

in #art8 years ago

A few weeks back we were trying to find something interesting to do here in Los Angeles. Amanda was looking around the web and found this interesting event in downtown LA.

I don't know how long this has been going on, but apparently it is worldwide now. The event is called Art Battle and somehow we managed to get tickets to the US Championship event. Of course we had no idea what it was going to be and purposely didn't read anything about it so that it would be a surprise.

We showed up a bit early and couldn't get in the door so we stopped next door and had some food. We were sitting outside, so we could see when a line started to form in front of the building where the event was being hosted.

After giving the doorman our tickets and walking through into the main area, the following scene is what we saw immediately in front of us.

So yeah, as you can see. It is exactly what the name suggests. An art battle. In the back you can see a DJ setting up his equipment along with a rotating wall with previous art made by the competing artists.

It turns out that 5 artists have been in qualifying matches all over the country and made it to this final round here in LA. A 6th artist was picked from a hat or something. I didn't really get how that worked out.

View from where we found a seat

There was seating on a second floor surrounding the bottom floor so you could get a good vantage point for whatever was about to happen. Clearly some cool kids were gonna come in and start painting something on the canvases, but what are the rules?

After a few minutes, a crowd started to form and the somewhat nerdy looking DJ was ready to go. He even had a weird lighted helmet that he put on that really didn't make him look any cooler, but I digress.

Finally the rules were announced. They were pretty straightforward. There will be 3 rounds. Rounds one and two are 20 minues each.

After 20 minutes, they have to stop painting and we send a text from our phones voting on who we liked. The top artists go on to round 2. From that group, the top 3 go on to the final round, which is 30 minutes in duration. The champion is the winner of that group.

So in came the painters, and away they went... To the rhythm of some really aggressive dub-step and house beats.

Amanda and I kind of looked at each other and laughed about the seriousness of the whole thing, but it turned out to be quite a fun night.

It turns out that we were actually in the best spot, because the two best artists were right in front of us.

Luckily there was a big screen adove the stage where you could see the action a bit closer. There was a guy walking around with a camera live streaming it to the screen.

This one only emerged as a butt in the last 5 minutes of painting. We got a good laugh!

The guy who did the above face is apparently a TV actor who is a somewhat known artist named Joseph Lee. At first I wasn't really digging his stuff, but in hindsight, he was the most fine art artist of the group. His work is actually quite interesting. It's worth checking out his website here.

The above 3 shots are of the 3 finalist paintings. Amanda and I voted for the 1st (the Geisha), but the 2nd one won. Honestly, we felt that the 2nd piece was a bit amateurish compared to the first, but I think you really have to look at your audience when doing a competition like this.

In hindsight, we were surprised that Joseph Lee didn't make it to the final round because he was clearly the most unique artist. But as I said, you have to look at your audience. In this case they were mostly under 30 cool kids who were probably more interested in graphic artists than fine artsy stuff. Which I can totally understand!

I will leave you with Joseph's piece from round 2 and let you decide for yourself. I'd love to hear in the comments which painting you all think is the best from the above images. Keep in mind that all paintings were completed from scratch in either 20 or 30 minutes, depending on the round.

What an awesome competition you went into. And it's pretty adventurous for you and your wife to come without reading any information about what's going to happen, but I guess it pays off nicely? :D

So many talented artists... and so many good arts! <3

Thanks @scrawly. It was more fun than I expected. I'm glad we went!

Hey friend. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful and amazing experience. I rrally enjoyed every bit of it and wish I would be chanced to engage in this kind of competition.

I believe these are oil paintings. Right?

I'm not sure if they were using oil or acrylic. They gave each of them a large pallet with big blobs of primary colors on them. I'm glad you liked the post! Thanks for stopping by :)

Then what kind of color could that be? Am just curious to know.

Wow even Bob Ross Cannot paint that fast. They are really are very talented in painting fast and under pressure @nuthman what more if they take their time.
The butt artpiece maybe caught the audience off guard unexpecting it LOL.

Yeah that butt painting made me laugh. We were watching the whole time thinking "What the heck is he painting?"

Oh so you're from LA? My favorite MMA fighter is from over there

Interesting concept, these battles. Some of those pieces don't look they've been created under the pressure at all.

Yeah, I wish I could just whip up a painting like that. Of course I've never painted anything. I leave that to my wife. hehe.

MMA is pretty huge around here. My friend goes to one of Gracie gyms every morning. There are several around LA.

Oh maan, your friend is sooo lucky !! Btw I also train gracie jiu-jitsu hah :) This guy on the pic is also a jiu-jitsu specialist, training in the best gracie gym in LA. He could strangle us both with one arm at the same time I can bet you on that :D

Lol.. do you know the name of the gym that he goes to? It might be the same one. I went there once to watch a fight with my friend on the big screen.

I thought they were all fantastic considering they were done quickly and under pressure, but my favorite was actually the owl.

The owl seems popular with people who follow me on Steem. hehe. It wasn't one of my favorites!

you are always out and about doing such cool things. I spent all of the last 2 days just sitting in my room but to be fair I was sick! Well done, as usual.

Oh! Sorry you were sick. That is miserable. I think you have more on me when it comes to doing cool things. It seems like you are in a new country every week! I am feeling the bug to travel again. Will have to do something soon, but have to make some money first. I am drained dry...

i think we are all drained dry. At least you live in an inexpensive city :P

Lol.. LA is so friggin expensive. No idea why we stay here

i think you realized i was speaking in jest, yeah. I lived in L.A. for about 2 months years ago. I can't imagine how people manage it financially. Maybe they are really talented musicians who write stuff for games ...

hehe.. Well, you make a lot of money, but you spend a lot of money. The problem is, even though you end up doing a lot of contract work that can easily be done online and delivered online, people around here want to work with people who live here.

Right now I don't make nearly the money I was making 5 years ago so life is becoming quite a struggle out here. I don't know how long I can maintain living here if things don't pick up work-wise again. Unless Crypto has another nice bull run!

yeah, where is that bull run? I hope you are in a position to hodl for a while as most of the people more heavily invested than me although they also didn't see this coming, are prepared to sit for a while.

I think life in LA is a lot like my pals earnings in NYC. They make soooo much more money than people not in the city for the same job, but everything in their lives is absurdly expensive so it all kind of balances out.

What amazing paintings in an extremely short time.Such highly gifted artists! That monkey reminds me of the movie 'Planet of the Apes'That's my fave.

I actually really liked the ape painting too. When he was drawing it I had no idea that was what he was drawing until close to the end. It surprises me how they can do that when painting characters.

That's a great outing enjoying art battle US championship.

Good art,

I hope you enjoyed a lot.

Hiya, @mango-juice! Yeah man, that is my favorite painting as well. That one was actually from the first round. I think it would have won the competition if it had been done in the final round!

I try to enjoy life, but I have to tell you it is all up and down these days. Hopefully things will get better soon.

It will @nuthman.. Dont you worry.

marry xmas in advance! 😊
