Wildflower series ~ Brachystelma chloranthum
Brachystelma are a member of the milkweed family, as are stapeliads, and they also have stinky flowers that are pollinated by flies. They grow from an underground tuber and some of this genus are very highly sought after by succulent collectors. The collected ones are larger plants with more spectacular flowers and they smell really bad. Brachystelma tend to smell like pig manure, instead of rotten meat like their stapeliad cousins do.
This tiny, insignificant little plant is often referred to as one of the "shoelace plants": one that you would never know is there unless you were bending down to tie your shoelaces. Even then, you wouldn't notice it unless it is flowering. I didn't notice any stink here, the flowers are just too small. A botanist told me that this is the small-flowered form of this species and it is pretty rare. It may be considered rare just because it is so hard to spot. I have looked and looked on the hill but this is the only one of its kind that I could find.
You are lucky again!
Yes, these flowers remind me of Stapelia flowers.
I have not seen such flowers.
They have a rare color, I like this color.
Thank!
I never saw them before, either
Lucky you!
It is always interesting to see new plants, insects and animals!
I think so
Never thought flowers that "smell really bad" would be sort after. :-)
They look amazing. Google "brachystelma flowers" and you'll see what I mean
Are you in Australia?
I've been really interested in 'tiny' plants of late, noticing little details over and above the big ones. Everything makesup the bigger picture and makes it more beautiful.
No, I am in South Africa although that is similar in many ways
You did well to spot that one then. What unusual little flowers.
I was pretty happy to find it

We also have plants that we just call thrush too. If it is picked, a liquid similar to milk appears from the stem. As this plant is properly called, I unfortunately do not know
Very difficult to spot these tiny plants! But the bad smell could help in locating the whereabout!
