Silver Dollar Jade finally flowering

in #succulents6 years ago

A few weeks back, I posted about the jade trees that were blooming although the Silver Dollar was taking its time. Silver dollar jades, Crassula artborescens, are actually a different species to the ordinary jades, which are Crassula ovata. My patience has finally been rewarded, so here it is:

The flowers start out pink and then gradually turn white

I just moved my succulents around to the north-facing side of the house as the changing seasons has made the sun's angle much lower and they don't get much sun at all at the moment, which will make them lose their colouration. In the case of Jades, if they don't get enough sun, they won't flower. Although that's not the reason the Gollum refuses to flower. Apparently it does, but mine just won't. For those who are wondering what a Gollum is, it is a monstrous form of Crassula ovata, so the leaves have weird shapes. There have been quite a few variants of this one bred but this particular one is commonly called Gollum or Shrek ears.

In case you are wondering about the background, it's a cat skull that I found on the hill a while ago

Loving the skull backdrop

Really pretty flowers! I like how they start out pink and then turn white. That cat skull looks really unusual.

Thank you. I like skulls and bones and there are a couple around the place

I had a few ogre ears when I was living in NY and none of mine ever bloomed either! But I have seen it here in California.

I live in hope. I have had this plant for about 6 years, although that is a smaller piece of it in the picture. The mother plant got broken into pieces thanks to fighting cats :(

LOL isnt that the best part about succulents though? You can pretty much always save them after they've been roughed up.

I love their indestructibility

Very scary skull with huge teeth against the background of such beautiful flowers. Very original

Thank you

are they named because they are about the size of a silver dollar?

Jade trees are called money trees, perhaps because the leaves are coin-shaped although I don't really know why. I think the silver here refers to the silver-grey of the leaves but I could be wrong

Aaaaaaa so cute! None of my plants have ever flowered! I think its because the lack of sun, am i right?

In some cases, yes. But it is also because the temperature can remain fairly constant indoors, so the plants don't experience the seasonal changes which trigger flowering

What a success!! Jade plants grow for many years without blooming. Even in their native habitat, the plants need to be very mature before they form flowers. Congratulations @nikv, your plant has grown!

Actually, this is a branch of a plant that I rooted only last year. But it's said that cuttings keep the age of the parent plant

You got it.

Its like the flower is weather controlled?

Beautiful pictures!
Congratulations on the flowering!
I heard that the money tree blooms at the age of 8-10 years.
Thanks for the information, I did not know that the cutting keeps the age of the mother plant.
I have several types of money tree, but I, for some reason, have difficulties in growing them ...
