Acheron River...

The Acheron is a river located in the Epirus region of northwest Greece. It is 52 km long, and its drainage area is 705 km2. The river called Acheron with the nearby ruins of the Necromanteion is found near Parga on the mainland opposite Corfu. The word Acheron is also occasionally used as a synecdoche for Hades itself.

In ancient Greek mythology, Acheron was known as the "river of woe", and was one of the five rivers of the Greek underworld. According to later traditions, Acheron had been a son of Helios and either Gaia or Demetra, who had been turned into the Underworld river bearing his name after he refreshed the Titans with drinks during their contest with Zeus.

The Nekromanteion was an ancient Greek temple of necromancy devoted to Hades and Persephone. According to tradition, it was located on the banks of the Acheron river in Epirus, near the ancient city of Ephyra. This site was believed by devotees to be the door to Hades, the realm of the dead.

Following Greek mythology, Charon ferries souls across this river to Hell. Charon or Kharon is the ferryman of Hades who carries souls of the newly deceased across the rivers Styx and Acheron that divided the world of the living from the world of the dead. A coin to pay Charon for passage, usually an obolus or danake, was sometimes placed in or on the mouth of a dead person. Some authors say that those who could not pay the fee, or those whose bodies were left unburied, had to wander the shores for one hundred years.
