Billionairs and Managers buy "Overwatch" Teams

in #gaming7 years ago (edited)

Blizzards colourful Hero-Shooter "Overwatch" with its exciting team battles is still - one year after the release - highly popular. To keep this, Blizzard counts on E-Sports. By now "Overwatch" is a favoured tournament game and is played by competitors for huge prize money. After all, people have started multi million dollar trades for buying this teams.

The German IT-Portal "Golem" reports, that managers and billionars which already own divers sports teams have started buying "Overwatch" teams. Teams from Los Angeles, New York, Seoul and Shanghai have found a new owner some time ago. The team from New York f.e. is now owned by investor Jeff Wilpon, who also owns the Baseball team New York Mets.

IT-Billionairs and magnates are buying teams

The "Overwatch" team of Seoul was bought by mobile game developer Kevin Chou, a team from Boston was bought by the owner of the New England Patriots.

Nothing was said about the financial details but one should assume that millions were brought in. The buyers of the "Overwatch" teams could see their buy as an investment as experts predict a blossoming future regarding E-Sports. In South Korea f.e., exciting E-Sport battles are shown in the common TV since a longer time. Talented gamers are treated like pop stars.

Blizzard aims high with his "Overwatch"-League

The already bought teams are part of the so called "Overwatch"-League, which Blizzard wants to bring into position as in-house league. The battles are going to be publicly viewable in an area in Los Angeles. Blizzard wants to recrute teams from all over the world, although the goal is a regional attempt in which cities will go to battle against each other.

Blizzard and the buyers of the teams are sensing big business in the "Overwatch"-League. Broadcasting rights are sold, sponsoring and advertisement is offered. Tickets will also make the cash tills ring. Blizzard holds a participating interest and wants to finance the league with its earnings.

I'm still doubtful whether the overwatch will be a success when it comes to eSport because the games spectator mode is still not really that great.

Great post! Would you mind if I included it in today's "best of gaming"?

Hey there, thanks for your response. I understand your concerns regarding the spectator mode. Lets see what Blizzard will do about it.

Feel free to include it in your today's "best of gaming" and share my post as you like. I reference to this post is not needed, but would be very nice.
