Planning Herbs to Grow in Container Garden

in #homesteading8 years ago

Many among us who live in city region, have very limited space for garden. So we don't get to plant the big trees. In such case it is helpful to plant some herbs or even grow plants which has some benefit to us. Here are some of the herbs I am planning to put into my container garden.

Coriander

We have a lot of coriander here. I make use of them in the salads and dishes that can be garnished with the coriander. I heard some people also make use of the coriander chutney. And it seems to be popular in asian cultures.

I have never tried growing them from seed phase. So have to learn that part. In terms of herbal value, the coriander helps with the digestion and uric acid issues. So considering the long term benefit of the plant, I'd say this is in my top priority for growing them all year around.

Lemon Balm

Just like mint, lemon balm is easy to grow. We don't have much mint options here in the nursery. So I am limited with either choosing lemon balm or wait for the mint plant to come in so that I can take home. I guess so my choice is limited in that context. Lemon balm has lot of medicinal values too.

One important use of the lemon balm is that it can keep the mosquitoes away. That's something many among us want when we are having so many plants around attracting mosquitoes. There are also seeds for the lemon balm but I am not in US and here we don't have seeds so I have to get the small plant from nursery and then grow it forward.

PepperMint

My reason for growing the peppermint is they can be helpful for the sinus. And it can be also useful for the digestion. I have seen people making use of the peppermint in salads and the juice too. So it's definitely something I'd grow long term.

I have also read about the peppermint being useful to keep some specific pests away. So that'd be another useful benefit in that case. Because just like lemon balm this seems to be one good plant that work as deterent against the pests.

These are some of my current choices for the herbs in the container garden. I may have to update the post once I add more herbs into the garden.

Let me know what you think about these herbs. Do you plant any other herbs?

I have just planted a mixed mint packet so that I can get the peppermint from it. It also has spearmint and curly mint which I han't heard of before. I want to make peppermint essential oil for massaging and maybe I could make essence as well? it will be interesting to see what comes up :)

Learned something new that they can be used for essence. I may have to check that part out too then :)

That's amazing! It's great to hear that you still get the chance to have your own little garden! And I can see that you choose your plants carefully! :)
I didn't know that lemon balm helps to keep mosquitos away - I guess that's what I'm getting next then! Thanks for sharing :)

Yes lot of such small plants have these benefits. I am just learning about them and yet to experience this myself :)

They are all great for container gardening and that way won't invade the gadren, even if you have one! They spread so fast it is hard to control and they will take over other plants. I wish you luck on your plant journey! <3
