Keep Posting Shit Challenge Day 2 - It Just doesn't matter (COM 42

in #writing5 years ago (edited)

Teaching math to a kid with dyscalculia is my daily challenge and joy.

Subtraction is my biggest obstacle so far. I'm trying to teach him that he can actually take something away and get a new amount. The concept that numbers can change just boggles him. Finally I took out measuring cups and practiced pouring different amounts in each cup and recording the new amounts. This worked fine and gave him answers for his math homework, but how is he going to bring a water bottle to his exam?

The bigger the number gets the more difficulty he is having catching it. Time and time again he just ends up crying. His math teacher gave him a second chance to take his math test. He studied and got all the problems right at home but the next day at school when he had to retest he got more than half the problems wrong. It's hard for him to empty his water bottle in the middle of the test.

I have been working with him in making sketches to help with the calculations. I helped him to compare heights with Luke Skywalker and Yoda. Actually I don't think the guy who played Luke Skywalker in the movie was even 182 centimeters tall, but I know for sure he was taller than Yoda.

If you can't beat 'em then join 'em.

Studying itself makes his head hurt. I found the best solution for this is to let him play. His brain is different from mine, but a lot of the math I learned was not in the textbook, it was from playing with toys or random things I would find.

He learned more about acceleration, momentum and gravity by playing with match box cars then he ever will be able to understand from a book.

If I look carefully I see that he has a hard time with actual numbers, but he is great with patterns, mazes and arrangements. It's just that at school he gets a lot of problems with no sense and no actualization. When I look at his room I can see he actually enjoys math and numbers, but in his own way.

The question is:

How am I gonna get him to enjoy numbers in the way that everyone else does?

He is beginning to hate school and especially tests. There seems to be no way to bridge the gap between his learning and working the math problems at school.

And it just doesn't matter. It just doesn't matter. It just doesn't matter. Do you know why it just doesn't matter? No, not because he will forget it all the next day. It just doesn't matter

because all the really good looking girls would still go out with the guys from Mohawk cause they've got all the money! It just doesn't matter if we win or we lose. IT JUST DOESN'T MATTER!

Love,

@mineopoly

This was supposed to be a shit post to write some random thing in ten minutes but I wasted 40 minutes writing and posting it so I hope you learned something. Anyway this is for #comedyopenmic so I will nominate some worthy Steemians. How about @etherpunk and @steemiteducation to post something funny for @comedyopenmic?

A drum is the solution. A big drum of water beside his seat in class haha.
But really, this is really nice of you. I hate the fact the fact that the system determines who's "smarter".
PS: I don't think Yoda was even up to 100cm

You are right again and I don't mind the double comment. I don't get many comments these days. I'm not sure how tall Yoda is but those were the numbers I needed to fit into his math problem.

That's right a drum of water. All kind of drums work for him. He loves music.

I think it is clearly going to be a challenge to help him to come ot terms with numbers let alone love them, but from readingthis post its clear to me he is lucky to have such a caring mother who takes the time to work out ways to help him to learn with out of the box ideas

Thanks @tattoodjay,

I can tell you enjoyed your Wednesday walk. How is the weather in New York?

I do love seeing the walks from all around the world, its been really cold these last few days but hopefully tomorrow will be a bit nicer :)

Thanks @tattoodjay,

The winter hit strong and then for the last week or two it got warm again. You are really consistent with posting and commenting on Steemit. I'm kind of off and on. Our school vacation is coming up and I don't have as many classes then. I will probably start posting something interesting here by then.

Glad it go warm again we are having a couple of warmer days now but lots of rain and wind, lets see where it goes from there, luckily I had the festive displays to get shots of not sure how consistent I will be over winter lOL

haha! howdy sir mineopoly! you're slaughtering your own rules! and it was very interesting so you broke the rules even more dude! But I guess it just doesn't matter.

Yup,

This was the worst excuse for spam. I am guilty of caring too much.

music is extremely mathematical , measures , beats , subdivisions , note groupings , intervals meaning distances , etc etc.. ever tried some of these?

That is awesome @pechichemena,

You told me you were a teacher, but I wonder if you are a music teacher or a general homeroom teacher or math teacher. I will look into how I can help him through music. He loves music and remembers everything he hears through music. He also sings a lot better than me.
