Birdwatching With @mindhunter #2: THE NIGHTINGALE (Luscinia megarhynchos)
Widely known for its beautiful song the nightingale is a summer visitor arriving in April and leaving in late September.
Source: birdpictures.pro
It is a shy and inconspicuous bird with a dull brown plummage which lightens on the underside.
Both sexes are alike in plummage and markings. The song which is remarkable at night is loud, full of deep notes and with an extensive run of trills and warbles. The nightingale is also made most famous by the TV series Twin Peaks.
Haunts
Copses, thickets and the edges of woodland.
Food
Insects and their larvae, occasionally berries.
Nest
Made of grasses, roots and dead leaves. Located on the ground or slightly up in low bushes, shrubs or young trees.
Eggs
Three to six eggs of a pale olive shade, with overtones which range from blue to brown. Laid in May or June.
Happy bird twitching!
David Lynch would be proud of this Steemit post.
I'd love to see some of his artwork on here :)
(most of it is VERY Lynchian!)
what about this one? I didn't recall the name of this bird. I took the picture in my highland.
Is it a jay of some kind? Not got a clue??
I see it in passing, not enough time to investigate, and only that picture. (?!!)
I think we'll need a MEGA birdwatcher to pass by for this one ;) BIRD SOS!!
Corpses huh?! Zoinks! Never really associated corpses with beautiful music but nature is a mysterious thing.
David Lynch wrote 'The Nightingale' song for Julee Cruise to sing in Twin Peaks.
A beautiful haunting melody:
I took an ornithology class in college. We had to memorize bird calls and every N. American bird by plumage. My final project was feeding methods between the black-neck stilt and the American avocet. That was not an easy elective. Yet, one of the few classes that I remember, learned something and still find useful.
Sounds like an ace class. I wish we had that at our colleges here in the UK. Stay tuned for more birds @runrudy!
Looking forward to it. : )
... I'll even let you feed them ;)
Hi @mindhunter
Nice post, I don't think we have nightingales in South Africa, now I also know what it looks like, I always thought it would be a more spectacular bird.
I agree. For its song you would expect to see a more charming looking bird!
I like this one a lot! Great singer!
Me too! I love to listen to it in bed at night during the Summer months :)
I really like this ..
You can't beat an innocent birdwatching post on Steemit :)
100% agree, 😄
I'll try to pick another good one for: Birdwatching With @mindhunter #3!! Suggestions most welcome!
okay, and good luck.
... maybe the robin ... I'll see?!
