Mentorship Group - Writing a query letter

in #story-mentor8 years ago (edited)

This week, I spent an hour every day from Tuesday to Thursday, learning how to 'Pitch' my book to an agent. On Friday, the tutor spent two and a half hours going over practice query letters, telling us what we did right, what we did wrong and what needed to be done to get that query letter 'pitch-perfect'.

This is a two-parter because it's quite long.

Here's my query letter.

Dear Ms Agent,

I’m currently taking a workshop, and as the tutor mentioned you by name, I decided to find out more about you. The eclectic list of genres you represent and enjoy reading encouraged me as my novel, Cobalt Nights fits in the thriller category (with an original hook).

I was the first female Door Supervisor (‘Bouncer’) in my town, and I’ve encountered a lot of interesting characters because of the job. With that in mind, I’ve written a fictional story, woven around some of my experiences.

The story is Roadhouse with a Russian Mafia twist.

~

An ambitious Head Doorman is caught between two opposing Russian Mafioso factions and he has to use his smarts to keep his head on his shoulders, his family safe and his business together.

~

Two brothers going into business together should be a walk in the park, but when the business is Door Security for nightclubs and casinos, with clients that include gangsters and possibly the Russian Mafioso, the walk in the park could become dangerous.

Zack put his brother through University by teaching martial arts and ‘bouncing’ on the doors of local pubs and clubs. Now he is at the top of that career, with no room to rise; the brothers decide to use their father’s small inheritance to fund a higher class of security firm. Bringing in the cream of the crop, where Doormen are concerned, to build their empire, they find it’s not all plain sailing, especially when two rival Russians are fighting over their business.

The opening of the new club in town, The Cobalt, brings issues neither had thought of, and when one of the brothers falls for the boss’s daughter, they have to tread a fine line where business and personal lives merge.

When the new kids on the block try to improve working conditions, pay and prospects for the Door Supervisors in town, not every pub, club and casino owner is pleased with the idea. Some are violently opposed to anyone trying to clean up the place, driving the drug dealers out, and paying their door staff more for the privilege.

I worked as a Door Supervisor (Bouncer) in the second-most-violent town in Nottinghamshire during the 1990s and early 2000s. The first female to take up that position in the town, I was a lone woman in a sea of testosterone. I worked through distrust, doubt and sometimes ridicule. As in many industries, unfortunately, I had to run twice as fast, twice as far to be considered equal to the guys in the same job. It wasn’t all bad, however. I made a lot of good friends and saw a lot of weird stuff, some of the stories have made their way into the book, woven into the story and plot with a healthy dose of realism.

I have 13k followers on Twitter, around 1500 on my author page on Facebook and 6500 on my blogging page on steemit.com.

I have a presence on IMDB for various work – Producer, writer, actress etc.

My husband and I are in the middle of starting a new business reviewing car shows, and that website is gaining traction too.

Thank you for your time, I hope to hear back from you.

Kindest Regards
Michelle

Let me know what you think is wrong with this - and whats right. Please don't flatter me or tell me it all looks great because we'll never learn that way.

Sort:

I don't know anything about writing a query letter to an agent, but it would seem to me it has to be similar to a resume or curriculum vitae only more polished and refined. I think it needs to be broken up into parts or it seems like a wall of words (sorry, my humble opinion). I would think a short introduction followed by a section that is a brief synopsis of your book. Then the third section with your relevant experience. This where you would write about being the first female bouncer. Perhaps a relevant photo or two to give the person reading your query can put a face to the information.

That's what I thought too! I'm learning SUCH a lot with this.

I voted you up on this one @ceciastor ... seems to make sense in what you are recommending.

This is a place I am interested in following you into @michelle.gent .. you are a great teacher for taking us along.

My 2 cents as we say over here:
  1. IMHO You might sound a bit more excited about the publisher, somehow grab their attention.
  2. Include your word count when giving the title of your book.
  3. You may consider structuring your paragraph about your characters in a cliffhanger.

Good points too, @rebeccabe, especially giving a cliffhanger!

thanks for letting me know you think I am on the right track :)

Thank you!

The things I learned include:

1 No one likes a kiss-ass (paraphrasing lol) 'Gushing' is a waste of valuable words. You get 300 max. To the point, as much information as you can. It's like going against my instincts as a descriptive writer.

2 I don't have the word count for my book, but yes! You're correct. Word count, genre etc. all need to be in there.

3 The Agent wants as much info on the book as you can get into the 300 word limit but the tutor did say not to tell them the ending, so yes, a cliffhanger (if you can fit it in) would be good.

On your first point go with your instincts, but maybe you could find someone else connected or published by this author in some way. Just think of standing out in some way will keep them reading.

In response to your answer, I am not asking for you to kiss anyone's ass. LOL.

I am not into that even in Steemit instead, I buy a bid vote and only hang around a few whales that are cool.

When I get to the point of publishing I will probably pucker up. LOL ♥️

I don't know anything about query letters either, but agree with this response.

Thanks for supporting my opinion.

I really have no idea about this kind of thing, so can only say what struck me. I think I'd be inclined to break it up with section headings, both for visual interest and to make it easier to locate whatever info is needed. I also felt the last section with your related experience seemed a bit fractured, without cohesive flow. Maybe having in under a heading that gathered it all together would be all that was needed to pull that bit together.

I would have thought al of those things, but the tutor wants everything stripped bare, no bells, bangles, buttons or bows, just, 'The facts, ma'am.' I really was astonished.

Huh. So did the tutor have any suggested improvements? Are you learning anything helpful?

The second query letter is the result of the lessons. I am honestly pleased with the tutorial so far.

Buenos días, ya por acá salió el sol, mi vecino ya me imagino desde oscuro preparando la tierra para sembrar.

Quedo bien, directa con estilo. Tuteas a un desconocido te hace entra en calor...bien me gusto. Ahora suerte. Ya voy por mi cafecito

Un abrazo

I consider you my mentor. You have a lot of experience and you always help those who need it. While I'm very busy and I do not always have free time. But I will definitely read your new and the story and give it my honest review if it matters :)

Yes, I also would like you to read my work for the mentoring group. I hope you like .... here and the second here

The first thing I thought when I finished reading this is, "Why is your main character male?"

I worked as a Door Supervisor (Bouncer) in the second-most-violent town in Nottinghamshire during the 1990s and early 2000s. The first female to take up that position in the town, I was a lone woman in a sea of testosterone.

I'd change Zack's sex in a heartbeat! I think your story from that angle would be much more appealing to the agent! A sister and brother team! I could sink my teeth into that story!

I don't have any knowledge on how to write a query letter either so; I did a bit of research on the subject.

The only other thing I found that an agent may question is why a website about car show reviews adds to your reading audience and if it will, why? Is it a written review, or video? Maybe that needs to be fleshed out a little to make it more transparent to the agent. I may be wrong on this point though... I am trying to look at it from an agent's perspective without the first clue as to how to be one.

It's a learning experience for me to watch you develop this process, thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I'd change Zack's sex in a heartbeat!

Pretty sure Zack will not like that ;)

A sister and brother team!

What an awesome idea! May I use that at some point please?

why a website about car show reviews adds to your reading audience and if it will, why?

Only for the fact that it may get some interest about my work, but you're right - dropped :)

It's a learning experience for me to watch you develop this process, thanks for sharing your experience with us!

STEEP learning curve!

You're most welcome :)

Sometimes I do these things to prove to myself how much I don't know ;)

This query is all wrong. It's essentially upside-down.

Start with "(novel title) is Roadhouse with a Russian mafia twist" (or something even more clever). You have effectively identified what type of novel this is. Even better would be to somehow add a detail or hook adding something specific to your novel and doing so without significantly increasing the length of the tease, by changing a word instead of adding one, or by adding a word instead of adding a phrase. It's a game of inches. Then there's that ephemeral element of wow. A rhyme or assonance or a brain-tingling something that will sink the hook deeper. Only you can say what it is because only you know your book that well.

You have to imagine an agent getting up in the morning, taking an Uber across the bridge into NY, and spending 29 minutes en route going through 113 query emails before she gets to her office when she's going to dump the emails and get to work. You have to hook her in the first sentence on what your novel is. You have to convince that you not only know exactly what you are doing as an artist but that what you have is going to make her money.

That you were a bouncer is admittedly interesting and you might include things like that in a short third paragraph but you have to hook her on the book itself at sentence one or she will never get to paragraph three, she's going to delete after only a few words if you don't sink the hook.

The agent query is the ultimate exercise in minimalism - the ultimate in writing finesse. Max punch in the least amount of words. Lead with the novel one-liner, then move to paragraph two with a short and RAZOR SHARP summary. Use all your ninja skills to make the summary as concise and compelling as possible. EVER EXTRA WORD is a liability. The agent is basically evaluating your writing skills in an above-the-fold writing sample. Your task is to demonstrate your deft writing skills to her in a very limited space. She doesn't have time for you this morning. Make her want to stop and pay attention.

Very really wonderful work
Writing and writing things evolved from human skills
I wish you permanent development

I cannot help you out with feedback, since I have no clue about this. It all appears fine.

I have a question. What is an original hook?

Thank you :) I knew it was rushed because I wasn't expecting the assignment, but it was literally torn apart (yes, she did warn us that she was blunt and I appreciate it).

Original hook is something to get the Agent interested in a unique manner - something unique in the story, the characters etc. I read an interview with an Agent and she said she liked to see query letters with an original hook.

Okay. Thanks for clarifying that.

For me, the most unique aspect of your book is the fact that you yourself worked as a bouncer. There won't be very many bouncers in the world who can write a book!

What about the car show review, that sounds interesting, can you share the link?

Not at the moment, but soon :)

Great post.
I like this education.
I appreciate your writing.
