Freewrite Day 117 - Church
Church
Oh-oh. My soul is in danger again.
And I haven’t taken the time to see what kind of religions surround me. Perhaps because I just choose to keep off those topics, the nicest people can turn into the… well, no so nicest people when defending their religion, or their church going habits.
Why do you do that? Bare your soul about churches on blockchain forever. “Why do you baptize your children?” The face of my waited-to-long for this moment daughter as she’s got her head held back daring me to tell her this is a good idea. Again. Maybe if the dress hadn’t been scratchy. Maybe if I would have warned her that Jesus would be bloody, and held on to the cross. With nails.I forgot that the churches in Mexico can be more gory. Sorry kid. Maybe the churches in Alameda are that gory too… we wouldn’t know.
The Native "baptisms" are so different yet surprisingly similar. Godparents still? I don’t know what they’re called. Taking the child and offering it up to all four directions. The how, I can’t bring myself to share, its so intimate, so… memorable, the type of memories that come from the heart. No camara’s to capture the child’s expression, to remind you of what you wore, to see what your make up looked like back in the day. I only have the memory of what I witnessed, no picture. But I remember more, the shape of the rocks...

I am amazed at how many people share their views on churches. It's all about freedom of speech and beliefs. Wondered the same thing about godparents, lol. Just exactly what are they? Do they take on the role of grandparents?
Sometimes I see some prompts and think... maybe not this one. But - that's the whole fun of the game. No picking and choosing, if you came for a freewrite, you freewrite, no topic hopping. LOL. I just made up that "rule" but its a guideline I like to follow.
Lol, it is a great guideline too. I agree though. We don't always get to pick and choose in life and that goes for freewrite. I think it helps our brain to think more.

Very well done. It's always strange to go back to a place with so many conflicting memories and now, new, thoughts. I think it's good to just let them settle in like you seem to be doing here.:-))

The issue of religion is very delicate to each person. As for the baptism of children, I'm for baptizing. Because parents are responsible for the child. If the child grows up and decides to change religion - it will be his choice)
I thought this piece was going to answer some questions I ask myself of me, but it went elsewhere. I guess i'll be doing a journaling session soon.
I worry about giving children too many choices. Choices can be overwhelming. But then, sometimes I worry about not giving enough choices, and deciding who they are for them...
Another great freewrite. That was a well aimed bundle of words.
I am the Godfather of a now 16 year old. Mother is a Wicca and father is indigenous. She calls me 'uncle'. It is absolutely one of the highlights of my life.
And a huge responsibility as well. Connections with the younger generation are a special kind of beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
