Crossing the pond

in #steemfest5 years ago

I'm writing this while I'm somewhere across the Atlantic, hovering higher than any bird I know of. Of course by the time this makes it to my blog I will be on the ground, but I didn't want to wait to put some ideas down.

I don't want to seem like I'm complaining, because I'm not really, or at least I shouldn't, but man it seems to me like the planes keep on getting smaller. Maybe this notion of mine comes in the heels of a report I saw regarding a particular air line reducing the distance between chairs, and I'm simply suffering from some sort of chair hypochondria, but since I did not bring a ruler, I stand behind the idea.

I also noticed that I failed to bring my glasses to the trip, a very silly move from my part since these days I'm somewhat of an ombilical reader, and in my tiny chair I'm having to put this phone between my legs.

Because we are all spoiled these days, I was under the impression that I would have one of those fancy screens with games, shows and movies, but this plane comes equipped with none of the fancies. Again, not a necessity by all means but a long flight like this one would be a lot more bearable.

The mild backpain I'm experiencing at the moment, reminds me of an old ad I once saw somewhere. An advertisement of some early commercial flying in what looked like the most comfortable of couches for a whole family to watch TV. I never confirmed the veracity, but boy that would be so nice.

Now, because I seem to be more prepared these days for boredom, I did get myself an audiobook on magic. Not that I could learn tricks this way, as I have no intentions of becoming an illusionist, but more because I've always been curious about the world they live in. My inner nerd who loves puzzles, intellectual challenges and what have you, has been fascinated with magic for as long as I can remember.

Oh, another thing I'm going to point out, food on this flight was not included either. I'm beginning to think I did not read the fine print at all this time, but it's ok, fasting is good.

Lights just got turned off, I'm going to try to rest but I doubt it will happen, it never does. Every time we hit turbulence and my heart tries to escape via my esophagus I wake right up. Yeah, I'm one of those guys... Always looking at the flight attendants, if they are chill, I'm chill...

It's ok... everyone needs a good whinge!

Much easier for me coming from the UK.

I didn't even get annoyed when the Starbucks staff mispelled my name on the cup during my 90 min layover.

Honestly: what kind of name is 'Kaul'.

I even prompted them with the 'as in Marx' reference.

Anyway. The good thing about flights is they always end, sooner or later.

What just got me is that they handed out cake and drinks on our 45 minute.

Are people really incapable of going for a couple of hours without shoving something down their gobs?!?

We try to be frugal and they try to reduce costs... i wonder how will the end game look? is it eventually going to be like the NY subway or better yet the packed Buenos Aires metro that had no AC...? soon we will be packed like sardines to save a buck on flight...

i flew once on a fancy super jet many moons back, cross atlantic, that had a bar and lounge area. the issue with this is control. by the time we reached our destination over a third of the passengers were well intoxicated. picture an emergency with drunk people who dont want to leave the bar or stay seated.

also yes, cost. once airlines began to get connivey, they began charging for everything! better seats, more room, first boarding, better food, "free" drinks, creature comforts... where at the same time they could advertise lower prices for seats that had no perks. lesson: you get what you pay for.
