Salinas Pueblo Missions Nation Monument
Years ago, while traveling out West our truck broke down near Albuquerque, New Mexico and needed a complete engine replacement. Of course it was just out of warrenty. It took a week for the dealership to do the vey expensive repairs, so while we waited we rented a car and explored the area.
One place that we visited Southeast of Albuquerque was The Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument. It is a complex of three Spanish missions located near Mountainair, NM.
These pueblos were built in the 1300s by the Anasazi, who were the ancestors of modern Pueblo Indians, They were sizable communities by the time Spanish explorers arrived in the late 16th century.
The sites had been abandoned by the end of the 1670s as a result of famine and tribal raids.
Because it had snowed the day before we had the place to ourselves and had a great time taking pictures. Even Anna got to do a little exploring.

What in the world happened to your engine that made it completely broke? Do you remember?

I don't know if I remember happened to the engine. I remember that it was a diesel and everyone said that never happens to that engine. It's dependable and reliable. Right and $12,000 later we had a brand new engine with a full warranty on it.
I think these were priests who had converted the natives to Christianity. This sign was on the site.

Every traveler's fear.... breaking down far away from home and needing expensive repairs. Looks like you made the best of it though.
I saw the snow before you mentioned it and at first thought maybe my eyes were deceiving me and it was just very white sand or something.... but no.
It was right around New Years Day, and there was even more snow up in the mountains. Not enough to hardly matter to someone who had just driven there from Wisconsin! Yeah the repairs on the truck were staggering and put a damper on the rest of the vacation.
Hmmm... the 1300s you say? Here I thought Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1872.. 😆
Even if Columbus supposedly made it here in 1492, these folks, and many others beat him to it! 😏

I don't remember the answer to that. I do remember that a lot of what was known about the places and the people who live there is still something of a mystery.

Yeah that repair bill was staggering and came close to ending the whole vacation before it had hardly begun. It was fun to have unplanned time to explore this area of New Mexico.

It was an unbelievable $12,000 repair. A whole new engine. It took a lot of shuffling of finances to pay that bill!

We went on to have a lovely vacation despite the ridiculous cost of getting the truck repaired. It took a while to get caught back up once we got home, but it was a marvelous trip.
