Physical and Chemical Changes Around Us

What are physical and chemical changes?

Everything keeps on changing by the second, including us. We can classify these changes into two types;

  1. Physical Changes
  2. Chemical Changes

What are physical changes?

When the material (substance) only changes its form and still keeps its chemical composition, such changes are called physical changes. Nothing new is created in the physical changes. Physical changes are reversible.

For example; water freezes into an ice cube, this change is a physical change because the water just changes its form as it changes from liquid to solid. This change is reversible as the ice cube can melt back into water.

Folding a paper, dissolving the salt into water, boiling water, heating up an iron bar and breaking a piece of glass are all the examples of physical changes.

What are chemical changes?

When something new is formed after a change and chemical composition of the material (substance) is changed, such changes are called the chemical changes. Chemical changes are irreversible.

For example; burning a piece of paper is a chemical change because after burning the piece of paper we got ashes which can’t be converted back into same paper and chemical composition of ashes is different than of the paper.

Rusting, breathing and exploding fireworks are some more examples of chemical changes.

Exercise: Make a list of 10 physical changes and 10 chemical changes observed in daily life.

Sort:

When I teach chemical changes, I like to include toasting marshmallows. This is a fun activity that students will always remember. I get the large marshmallows and a skewer. We toast them over candles. It is so much fun. I have teachers coming from all over the school to get a marshmallow. (they can smell them all over the school!)

That's a great idea. Kids learn physical and chemical changes while enjoying marshmallows with their teachers. Thanks a lot @lcerm for your feedback :))
