Rabbit-Food-Coma island

Hi Steemians. If you ever visit Japan I absolutely recommend visiting Okunoshima (大久野島) which is better known as Rabbit island. It is a tiny island with hundreds of rabbits! When I was visiting Rabbit island it was a holiday period. So with all the extra visitors feeding the rabbits most of these bunnies had eaten themselves in a food coma. Like this one:

I had fun watching them. But if you want to be more popular with the rabbits it might be a good idea to visit on a weekday outside a holiday period. Because almost all the rabbits were like this

The history of this island is bit macabre. Until the end of the second world war it was the location of a secret chemical weapon facility. The Japanese used rabbits as their test-subjects and also used these weapons to commit war-crimes in China. After the war the facility was demolished and all the test rabbits were killed. They then turned the island in a park and released new rabbits to populate it.

The island is located about 50km from Hiroshima so it is suitable for a day trip if you are based down there. However, if you are visiting the Kyoto-Osaka-Nara area then it is a bit too far to travel back and forth.
