Japan lunch-heaven!

in #foodphotography8 years ago (edited)

Hi Steemians! I live in the Netherlands. Over here lunch (and breakfast) is a sandwich. So when I started my research internship in Japan I arrived in lunch-heaven!

A Japanese lunch-set typically comes with a bowl of rice, a main dish and many tiny side-dishes.

Most sets come with a tiny plate or bowl filled with Japanese pickeled vegetables/fruits (see the plate next to the rice in the top picture). Usually there is also a bowl of miso soup. Since Japan is a fish nation you can always expect some fish. I am actually really bad at eating fish due to all the bones. I am okay with eating a salmon slice like the one on top but I take a really long time to eat a fish like the one below.

But do not fear. Japan is not all fish. There is almost always a lunch-set which mainly consists out of meat:

This set even came with some eggs. The eggs are uncooked. You crack them on your rice and then beat them through your rice. It is delicious.

All of these meal sets are actually surprisingly cheap. They are typically around 10 euro (12 dollars) and always come with free tea. So please give them a go when you are visiting Japan. I really see way too many tourists sitting in Mc Donalds and Burger King. If you are afraid that you might get into language troubles. Most Japanese restaurants have a plastic copy of the food. So you can just point at what you want! Super convenient.

So when you visit Japan you better get a typical Japanese lunch-set. There is absolutely no excuse for not ordering them :o)

I have really noticed that there is always a side food even for the chinese and then they will start picking little little from each dish.

But about visiting and trying out the dishes and the language barrier, what if i wanted to know how the dish taste before ordering?

Looks delicious!

I like Japanese food also:)

Lunch sets are the best when we go to Japanese restaurants here in Thailand. For starters, you get 'value' for your meal compared to sushi, where one sushi costs as much as a meal. Secondly, the sets are meant to be 'balanced', so you don't eat as much of one thing. Don't know how much of that is true, but that is a selling point when you think a set meal would be a lot, but the waiter/waitress says it's just enough for your body.
Hopefully, you'll get to eat more Japanese sets and less sandwiches ;)

That food looks delicious. Japanese people clearly know how to cook haha
