So... what means dead zone? Dead zones are hypoxic areas which have reduced level of oxygen in the water. When dissolved oxygen concentration of water fall down to 2 milligrams per liter or lower than that, the hypoxic condition occurs.
Nutrient pollution is the major reason to the hypoxic condition. River run off is the main way that ocean gets nutrients from outside. Increasment of discharge of wastewater into rivers and piped directly to ocean increase the nutrient level in some places of ocean. With the increase of limited nutrients, algal blooms can occur and this simply known as the eutrophication.

When algal blooms cover the surface of water, photosynthetic rate decrease because of the low light penetration. Low photosynthesis mean, low oxygen and when oxygen concentration fall to 2 milligrams per liter, water become hypoxic. Hypoxic water kills marine organisms such as algae, seagrasses and other living animals. Some mobile organisms abandon that area and migrate to the another place. Finally... it becomes a dead zone; a zone without any life.

The largest dead zone is the Gulf of Oman in the Arabian sea (63,700 square miles) and second one is Gulf of Mexico (6,000 square miles). Also scientists have discovered another 415 dead zones in the world.
The best part is we can turn them back to live once by limiting discharge of nutrients to water, controling enter of the animal wastes in to the water and by using minimum amount of fertilizers. But it may take some time.
Protecting is always easier and better than the reversing. So let's save our marine environment, let's save future.
