I Am An Explorer, Searching For Truth. Please Join Me!

Hi everyone at Steemit! I have another account here under @profmarriahstar. I will use that account to share writings and ideas as I prepare them for publication in various forms. For this account, I will talk about the experiences I have had, both in the distant past and in the recent past. In a sense, the @profmarriahstar account will be used to make a map of reality as much as possible. In contrast, this account will be used to explore all kind of experiences, the territory of life.

I have identified that there are, in general, three kinds of people in this world: 1) consumers, 2) mystics, and 3) explorers.

The consumer
consumer-behavior.jpg

A consumer likes to experience all kinds of different things in life. I have a good friend who loves food and loves traveling all over Asia. I have traveled all over Europe. As consumers, we like exploring different things, sampling the enormous variety that Earth offers human beings – landscapes, plants, animals, climates, cities, natural vistas, musical styles, dance styles, culinary styles – the list is endless. The challenge with being a consumer is that it is so hard to appreciate everything when there is an infinite variety of experiences. The beauty of being a consumer is that this world is filled with infinite surprises!

The mystic
mystic-wallpaper-1280x800.jpg

A mystic is the opposite of a consumer. While the consumer travels all over the world to experience the variety of life, like a train going to many destinations, the mystic stays in one place to meditate and dream, letting the world come to him (or her). By staying in one place and increasing the sensitivity of the physical senses (especially taste, touch, smell, and hearing because so much information comes in through sight), the mystic notices things that other people may not. The mystic has keen powers of observation and deduction, like the fictional Sherlock Holmes. The mystic can easily sit on a bench in a park (like Eckhart Tolle did) and observe everything happening in the environment. The challenge with being a mystic is that the mystic is so sensitive to all experiences, each experience takes time to process. The beauty of being a mystic is that the world is filled with amazing experiences that transform and improve the person having the experience.

The explorer
world-explorer-clipart-1.jpg

An explorer is in the middle between the consumer and the mystic. While the consumer might say “nothing is amazing” and the mystic may say “everything is amazing,” the explorer says “some things are amazing and I want to find them.” Every explorer depends on a combination of good maps and intuition to function in a new environment. Once the explorer finds something amazing, his or her greatest desire is to share this discovery with everyone on the planet. The challenge with being an explorer is that sometimes maps are inaccurate and the explorer reaches what seems to be a dead end. The beauty of being an explorer is that with luck and hard work, even a little bit of patience, the explorer eventually discovers something that improves everyone’s life.

I have been an explorer in academia for 25 years. Now I am in China, exploring Chinese culture and history while I teach international relations to students at China Foreign Affairs University. I also have a huge collection of movies and TV shows. I use this collection to explore American culture and history. The best thing about Steemit is that I get to explore life with other people every day and get paid for it. This is a much better idea than the previous attempts at social media, including Twitter and Facebook. Thank you for joining me on this great journey, and please share your discoveries with me!

Hello marriahstar! Welcome to Steemit! Hope you'll like the community here. As a start, here are 5 tips that we believe will be helpful to you:

  1. Keep your passwords safe: Unlike conventional sites, Steemit has 4 types of passwords. Each offers varying degrees of access to your account, so know where and when to use each of them. Also, make sure to keep them all safe and secure.
  2. Get Steem rewards: When writing a post, you'll have the option to choose how to receive your reward: "Default 50%/50%" or "Power Up 100%". As of this moment, choosing Default 50%/50% is the better option. But this can change over time. Check our post to know more.
  3. Upvote wisely: When upvoting, wait at least 30 minutes after the post is published to maximize your curation reward. Also, make sure not to upvote too much too fast so as not to drain your voting power.
  4. Know your Steem, Steem Dollars and Steem Power: Steem and Steem Dollars are the 2 main currencies here. Convert and power up more Steem into Steem Power so you can have higher values on your upvotes.
  5. Have Fun and Enjoy!

When I was younger, I was more a consumer and became a mystic as I got older, maybe at times, maybe around college, and I'm 33 now and might be an explorer now, or generally, on average in my life.

Grew up in Oregon, volunteered in Hawaii, and was working in Vietnam. I love travel and many things but prefer to stay in one place to let people come to me. Have ran around in life but I tend to try to get away from rat races in life. You are a smart man. I'm Oatmeal. nice to meet you. I'm near Seattle now.

Hi joeyarnoldvn, thank you so much for commenting on my first post! I think most people start out as consumers because that is the only way to learn about the world around us. At a certain point, probably when we enter our 30s and 40s, I believe we start to ask "what does all of this mean?" if we are not too busy with our careers and families. As I traveled between Arizona and Boston or New York City for 25 years to obtain my college and graduate school education, I noticed that people on the West Coast started asking about the meaning of life much earlier than people on the East Coast. I concluded that the warm climate and the relative ease of living on the West Coast gave people more incentive to contemplate the meaning of life than people living on the East Coast. Now I am living in China and I am immersed in a culture that seems to take contemplating the meaning of life very seriously.

Yeah, as a west coaster from Oregon, yeah, was asking what it all meant when I was about seven and it grew with age and I am 33 now and I guess people do tend to think about it earlier on the west than the the east like you said and I was on the east and met people on the east.

China is interesting. I was in Vietnam. Good to ponder life. Great to think about what we might be Living For (L4) and when we got important things to share, we can spread it more in parodies, through smiling, songs, memes, music videos, if we don't take ourselves too serious with life truths, proverbs, etc.
