A Christmas Poem

                                   When our bosom’s filled with love,
                                   and lights of Christmas bathe it all,
                                   gently caressing the street walls
                                   with warm sweet colors of the stars,
                                   and smoothly rubbing our scars
                                   with sparkling softness of the night,
                                   with twinkling joys like jelly candies,
                                   like children, we relish these fancies
                                   and savor dear sugary flavors;
                                   we want to share them with dear neighbors
                                   and laugh, and hope, and sing, and cry.

                                   For Christmas time is to us all
                                   the end of one of many walks,
                                   still frames in albums and old clocks
                                   which make our memories recall
                                   longtime companions, empty halls,
                                   a missing call, a closing door;
                                   but also beauty and forgiveness
                                   and lucky breaks and bliss we’ve witnessed
                                   along the year of lit up ways,
                                   we are those kids of waning days.

                                   In Christmas time lights shine above
                                   when our bosom’s filled with love.

About This Christmas Poem

Our musical ear endorses with deep aesthetic satisfaction rhymed poetry which turns out well. This last matter is the difficult part. There are many poetical forms which have become classics because they have turned out so well that have survived time and its peoples. But sometimes we feel like we do not want to play that safe.

Although inspiration alone is not enough to make a poem work out, it is sometimes powerful enough to make us want to try. In this occasion, I have composed three stanzas in iambic tetrameter (four metrical feet which sound ta-TA). The first two stanzas follow a rhyme scheme abbccdeeffg, with only the third couplet rhyming assonantly; whereas the third stanza is an only couplet, which last line repeats the first one, as to reiterate the motif of the poem.

This humble lyrical composition is my Christmas gift.

Merry Christmas!
