I said it before: the US cannot force China to anything.
The only cure for the current dilemma the US is in would be, to build up a new industry for consumer goods, to replace the imports from China. Until then, American have no choice but to buy the stuff from China, and pay what ever they cost, including tariffs and all.
The alternative would be, to live without cell phones and TVs, and 3/4 of the other things you are used to have in your daily life. If you think the american people are prepared to do that - great, then you can dictate terms to the Chinese.
Agreed. It would be tough.
Saying it would be tough is quiet a understatement. Even if we ignore the higher production cost for US made products for the moment - it would take some time until the demand for all those products can be met. Comparable to the effort that was made to build up the war time production after Pearl Harbour. At least 1 - 2 years. I don't know what the american voter would say to that.
