YES YOU NEED TO TAKE TIME TO STUDY THOSE MAGNIFICENT CREATURES .

Personally I believe you need to learn about whales and understand them. This will give you great stand point to love those creatures, the magnificence of their body and life habits are fascinating not only to scientists but to everyone who have a chance to watch and respect for this creatures is automatic. Have fun watching.
