My only hard disk broke...Is my life over?

in #technology7 years ago (edited)

Last night I was writing a post about Ibiza and when I connect my hard disk to my computer to get the pictures, I heard a weird sound and puf.. Nothing happened.

I spent two hours trying to make it work but without any success I thought: ‘Maybe it’s just a problem with the cable.’

Today, when I came to work I asked the IT guy about the issue and he said: ‘By the noises you are describing, it seems that your hard disk is broken.’

In a fraction of seconds, I saw my whole life sinking to the deepest point in ocean. I saw all my memories disappearing.

Maybe I can find some pictures here

The whole day I thought about all the places I visited, all the writing I left behind to one day come back and rewrite. I have on my computer two unpublished books and few pictures saved.

I know that probably you are thinking: ‘What a silly girl, she saved everything in only one hard disk? What about iCloud?’

I'm not a silly girl...

I know but if I have to explain myself, my older computer was dying, so I did a backup in this hard disk. Now with my new computer, I planned to put everything back, in the iCloud and next month buy a new hard disk to store everything so I have three options. I have something on my Dropbox and Picasa, but not much.

Anyway, my drama became everyone’s drama at work, because I could only think and talk about it. The IT guy, who is also a good friend of mine, is going to have a look tomorrow and see if he can restore it or part of it.

In the meanwhile, I can tell you the lessons I learnt:

  • Back up your stuff in different hard disks, pen drives and any other options
  • Don't think that this will never going to happen with you

Maybe I can find a hard disk in this flea market in Budapest

Tomorrow, I let you know the final chapter of my technology soap opera. Maybe this will be a new beginning for me. I shall travel more and take other pictures. I shall write more. I shall rely less on technology (I am not sure if this is possible).

Having the feeling that I lost everything is weird. I am sad but it also makes me believe that I can do more and better.

Doing better means practicing so in October I am back to Budapest. I'm sure my brother and my godson will help me to take good pictures like that

It’s time to make more things happen instead of keeping everything in a hard disk. In few days, I will announce great news so I hope I will have your support in my new Steemit adventure.

There's some important lessons to be learned here.

To avoid the same potential situation, I make sure I've got at least three copies of all my important files:

This setup mitigates the risk of losing my files, and I recommend others consider doing something like this too.

WOW! Great tips!!!! I will have a look at Crashplan! Yeah, all my friends told me the same..at least 3 options for backup!! I will do it from now on..

Crashplan is going to discontinue their home user market, so I will have to find something other than Crashplan for your online backup. Please do comment on https://beta.chainbb.com/chainbb-general/@protoken/so-crashplan-is-closing-down-their-service-for-the-consumer-market-which-backup-provider-should-i-migrate-to if you come across any good alternatives.

Before giving up, you should try to repair the disk through the disk defragmentor and disk error checker.

This can happen due to bad sectors in the disk. When the head in the hard disk runs over a bad sector, it does not know where to go and keeps spinning like a madman, making the weird noise.

This has happened to me in the past and I was able to recover the data before dumping the hard disk. Hope this helps in recovering your data!

oh thanks for your advice!! I will do it! It is sad to give up on it.. so any advice is good! Today I will give it to the IT guy from work but apart from that I have a friend who said can recover the data! Let's hope!!!!

Let's hope for the best before declaring it dead :)

Cheers!

External hard drives (like most computers) have about a 4 year lifespan;at least that has been MY experience(heart breaking experience). At the 3 year mark I transfer everything onto a new drive AND attempt to save the most precious items to disc...which don't last forever either!

Hmmm interesting.. I didn't know that about lifespan... thanks for sharing this info... so maybe the best thing will be to store on iCloud? So sad.. will see tomorrow if I can have anything back...

Oh, that's so sad. I hope you can get it back to working in no time. Cheers

me too!!!!! thanks for your message!!!

Even cloud storage sometimes get compromised but precautions are always better.
You said it right 'you can do more and better'...
