Yerin forma və ölçüləri
Yerin kürə şəklində olması haqqında ilk fikir yunan alimi Pifaqora məxsusdur. Yerin formasını əvvəllər kürə, ellips (Nyuton), geoid (qütblərdən basıq), son zamanlar isə Yerin şimal qütbünün qabarıq, cənub qütbünün isə basıq olmasının müəyyən olunması ilə əlaqədar olaraq karioid (ürəyə bənzər) adlandırırlar.
Yerin kürə şəklində olmasını elmi cəhətdən ilk dəfə sübut edən Aristotel (e.ə. IV əsr) aşağıdakı fikirlərə əsasən yerin kürə şəklində olmasını güman edirdi:
1. Ay batanda Yerin Ay üzərinə düşən kölgəsi.
2. Dağa qalxdıqca üfüq dairəsinin genişlənməsi.
3. Gəmilərin üfüq dairəsində itməsi.
Yer orbitinin uzunluğu: 940 mln. km.
Öz oxu ətrafında fırlanma müddəti: 23 saat 56 dəq. 4 san.
Günəş ətrafında fırlanma müddəti: 365 gün 5 saat 48 dəq. 46 san.
Ekvator radiusu: 6 278 km.
Qütb radiusu: 6 357 km. (fərqləri 21 km.)
Ekvator çevrəsinin uzunluğu: 40 076 km.
Meridian çevrəsinin uzunluğu: 40 009 km.
Yerin sahəsi: 510 mln. kv. km. (su sahəsi 361 mln. kv. km. , quru sahəsi 194 mln. kv. km.).
