Experience with Online Scammer

in #life10 years ago (edited)

It is said that there is a whole new world out there. Where? The Internet certainly! You meet thousands, rather millions of people every day. Some of them are good, some are bad. Some have the decency to act better with you while others twist the facts in such a way that things although seeming true are far worse in reality.

Anyway, my story relates to a business venture which I undertook a few years ago. I am basically a mechanical engineer who has his own established workshop whereby I take orders from people all over the world. These orders are mostly related to shaping out machinery that fit in well with the surrounding establishment. Most of my business has to run online because obviously, one cannot go everywhere. You might say that I must be a naïve specimen who fell for a scamming online deal but if you have watched ‘Catch me if you Can’, you will have to agree with me that anyone, anywhere can fall prey to such deals.

There happened to be a guy who was a pretty great client. I had connected with him via Skype and Messenger too. We had done many projects together. Actually he was more of a free agent who took projects from other people and had them done from other free agents such as me.

It so happened that a big project turned up through him. It was about getting the machinery pressure to an optimal limit in a pizza place to ensure that the pizza is cooked wholly and optimally. The controls had to be in the hand of the person running the place so that he could make sure when the machine is being used and when it isn’t. It does seem very commonplace and non-technical when looked at as an outsider but it certainly involved some readings that were extremely important for its successful completion.

Following my company protocol, I demanded a starting cheque. However, my agent requested that the client could not come up such a large amount at the moment. However, in a few days he will be able to pay up. I sorted out my finances and started working on the project. I received an email mentioning the delivery address. I finished my work, contacted the middle man and informed him that I had completed all the work. This led to the story turning to somewhere where things didn’t turned out to be as they were be expected.

A couple of days later my middle man called me and asked me how good was I? I was dumbfounded. I told him that we had just chatted a few days back and I just waiting for my payment. The middle man was so apoplectic saying that he had an overhaul of his system. He didn’t even know whether we had taken a project or not.
At last, I came to understand that the person needing the work done was a person who worked for my middle man and then hacked his profile and got the work done. From then on, I’ve decided to take care of all my dealings to prevent myself being a victim of online fraud.
