Project Details

Hello everyone,

I've made sure that everyone knows by now that I have been on a new Steemit journey ever since @utopian-io & @davinci.witness launched the Translation Category. This gave us the opportunity to offer our services and provide quality translations for various Open Source projects. And here I am with another part of the greek translation of FreeCAD, which by the way is my second project, but I'm sure this is something you know as well. I can say that I have been having great fun working on the translation of this software. In case you didn't know, FreeCAD is an Open Source AutoCAD competitor that runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, and supports various types of open file formats.

This is just a reminder of the importance of all Open Source communities in a hectic world of scientific development and suppression of information:

Open Source means true freedom; there are no limitations. What better way to assist scientific progress and development than with the creation of free powerful tools. And even though this is not news to many of you, it is worth noting that the most important advantage of FreeCAD is the fact that is is an Open Source project. As I have mentioned several times in the past few weeks, FreeCAD can be used by other programs as a library as well. Suppression of information can slow our civilization's progress down, that's why Open Source projects are a technological blessing of our times.

And this is where you can find more information regarding this project I have been working on:

For more information regarding this wonderful Open Source project you can visit the the project's Official Website, as well as one of my previous contributions. If there's any specific kind of information you'd like to read about this project, please leave your requests in the comments below and I will undoubtedly do my best to provide all information necessary promptly.

I'm glad I was given the opportunity to offer my services and therefore I will continue to work hard and do my best.

Contribution Specifications

  • Translation Overview

This is the eleventh part of a wonderful and rather useful project. As I have mentioned in almost all of my previous contributions, FreeCAD is also a rather exhausting project that comes with unique difficulties. Too many technical terms are included, while dev terminology adds another layer of difficulty. Oh, there's more; no context available for the vast majority of strings. It is also worth keeping in mind that FreeCAD is a large project that consists of roughly 31,770 words. Taking everything mentioned above into consideration, and in order to be able to provide a quality end product, I have decided that I will be translating from 1,000+ to 1,200+ words in each part, making sure to conclude at least two to three parts every seven days so that this project is finished in time. My translation is now 42.1% complete and subject to @ruth-girl's proof-reading.

  • Languages

The current project is being translated from English to Greek.

  • In This Session

I made sure to check all previously translated strings of the FreeCAD.ts file (once again) before I proceeded to start translating the remaining strings of the same file. One of the main reasons is the fact that this file in particular includes too many strings that were already translated and needed to be corrected, and since I haven't concluded this file yet I have to keep checking everything to ensure I didn't miss anything. Once again, I checked all previously translated files (Arch.ts, Complete.ts, Draft.ts, Drawing.ts, Fem.ts) as well and made sure to correct a few mistakes that I spotted. Of course these words are never included in my word count and that was the case this time as well.

To be honest with you I felt like this was going to be a relatively easier part, however it turns out that this wasn't the case. I am still working on the translation of the FreeCAD.ts file, which includes too many unclear and demanding strings, and I am left with no other choice but to conduct extensive research in order to come up with proper solutions in numerous cases. It is worth mentioning that I didn't spot as many errors regarding syntax and grammar as I did while working on the previous pages of the FreeCAD.ts file. Nevertheless, there are a couple obstacles that are still standing in my way; there is no context available regarding too many strings and the FreeCAD wiki documentation is still incomplete, therefore there are no explanations available regarding many tools and commands.

As a result, many features of the program remain unexplained on the web, which is a factor that induces the need for experience and theoretical knowledge. Moreover, various inconsistencies in the translation of specific strings in different languages can cause great confusion and make this endeavour a lot harder than it may seem. But hey, don't get me wrong. Despite the fact that I seem to be whining, I actually enjoy working on this project a lot. I will keep doing my best in order to make sure that this project is concluded successfully.

  • Word Count

According to Crowdin, in this part I translated 1,133 words (1,155 as demonstrated on Crowdin, minus approximately 2% of those as untranslated words). I have now translated a total of 13,127 words.

Thank you for contributing again to the Davinci-Utopian translation project @lordneroo!
This was your 12th contribution to the Translation category and the 11th part of the FreeCAD project.

As I mentioned in your first FreeCAD contribution post:
This time you have chosen a difficult project; not only is it a long text, but technical terms are plentiful in FreeCAD and you need to spend a long time looking up for the correct translation of those terms in the target (Greek) language. I trust you being an engineer qualifies you for this particular project and I am sure you will manage to complete it correctly.

Regarding the current session, you gave me another great piece. Your translation is well-researched. The fact that the project owner has submitted wrong translations himself, has syntactical errors in the English text and does not respond to questions of translators asking for clarifications and context makes your work a lot more demanding. Despite the difficulties, you always give us very accurate translations and never get tired to look up terms and correct any minor wording mis-matchings you spot throughout the whole text.

I also like your detailed contribution post. You explain very well the current session, your difficulties and the importance of the specific software and the Open Source world in general.

Thank you once again for the effort you put in all this! Keep up the great work! It’s a pleasure to have you working with us!
