Lovely lavender

At this time of year, lavender comes into flower and of course the bees are just loving it.

Lavender is an easy plant to grow - a well drained soil and plenty of sunshine.

However, there are a few things to remember if you want your bushes to stay looking good.

Firstly, remove faded flowers on a regular basis in order to keep more flowers forming.
As the plants grow, trim them to keep a nice shape, but do not cut back severely as this can cause the plants to die back.
At the end of the season, you can do some pruning but start from the base and work upwards forming a wine glass shape and do not cut into thick older stems.

I never use fertilizers on my lavender - just good compost in the soil and as a mulch.

Use the flowers in cooking, pot pourrie and in the vase - sachets filled with flowers and placed under a pillow are said to help you sleep.

Thanks for all the tips! I can imagine how good the smell it is.

That looks great. My lavender died this year after having it for 6 years. I usually just pot it and bring it inside in late fall and then take it out and plant it in the spring. I guess it didn't like where it was growing even though the rosemary right next to it did well.

Yes sometimes these things happen - sadly.

GREAT for the bees and pollination all around the garden.

I propagated some lavender last year; it grew but didn't produce flowers this year. Hopefully next year they will.

I am sure it will - keep nipping off new shoots to encourage more growth.

That's a really lovely bed of lavender. It's too cold here for it to survive, have tried it a few times.

That is a great pity.

Well, yes and no. My sister planted the original herb gardens in 1992 and then moved to New Mexico. She'd put in 5 - 6 varieties, and only 1 survived. I think it was because it was so near the woodstove in the cellar, along the foundation. When we built the other side 6 years later and didn't use the woodstove in the cellar so much, it died.

I am an oddball who does not find the smell of lavender pleasant. I think it's a nice plant to have in the garden, but would not use it. I did try to grow some last year, and for some odd reason it survived the winter unprotected.

But this year it is under that tree of a tansy. It was still alive when I last checked. Today I hope to work in the New Herb garden and try to tame the tansy. So I may yet have a tiny lavender plant, if it survives another winter.

I am holding thumbs for it to survive!

Debbie does well with lavender. 💕

I have grown lavender in my herb garden and it is, indeed, easy to grow and such a delightful plant! Good information here! 😊
