Hey what's up guys! Back with another tutorial. This time I'm going to show you how you can use 3D models as guides for backgrounds or objects! I'm going to use one of my artworks as an example, Chybelle.

Reference

Since this was another artwork commission. I'm going to show you the references I used for the artwork.

Sketching

Before we proceed to building the 3D model, I needed to sketch the background first so I could get an idea of how the final shot would look like.

The red parts will become mechanical body parts.

3D Modeling

There's a bunch of free 3D modeling softwares out there like Blender & SketchUp. I use SketchUp for it's super friendly user interface! It's very limited though, and will require a lot of plug-ins if you're going to use if for complex 3D modeling like sculpting.

Now I'm not going to teach you how to use SketchUp here. I'm just going to show you what I did.

Inking

The only thing I inked was Chybelle.
chy ink.png

I could have used the 3D model as a sketch and inked it with Chybelle but SketchUp has this feature where you can export the 3D model as lines.

After exporting it, you can now add it to your artwork!

Flats

Have I mentioned that I hate doing flats. : )

Painting

Finally! The fun part! First I painted the background (BG). In my case, I also get tired of painting after a while. Since the BG is huge, if I did that last, I might not put that much effort on it.

Now, Chybelle's turn.

Final Product

Of course, an artwork commission won't be complete without some revisions! lol

I hope you found this art process useful. I'll try to post more tutorials. ^-^
Bye for now!

Oh man love the use of sketchup to make perspective correct background objects this is a cool idea thanks for opening my eyes to a new way I can add to my creative process. Going to follow you to see more of this quality of work thank you for sharing your process.

Yep! It's really useful for those kinds of things. Thanks a many, @allowisticartist!

great tutorial man and awesome result! :) I know nothing about 3d or how to use it.. it is still on the list of things i need to learn .. :/ though ill probably be too lazy to apply it to anything anyway!

Keep up the good and cool workz! :)

Sketchup is super easy to use. And thanks for reblog of great artists it is so cool to see so many people sharing how they approach the creative process.

Dude you're such a pro that you won't probably need it! xD Sometimes being lazy is a good thing. It makes you innovate new techniques for the sake of working less. lol Thanks as always, beek!

Wowzas, awesome character design there <3

Amazing Post and Tutorial! :D
And the result is great! Thanks for sharing!!
How long did it take you to do the 3d model?
Upped and resteemed! 😎
Have a nice day @lires!

I honestly can't remember. I think a couple of hours maybe. SketchUp is easy to use. :D
Thanks a bunch, @w0olf!

That is really cool! I didn't know that you could use 3D modeling software like that. Learned something new - again.

Thanks for sharing, @lires! 😊

Wow That was a really interesting read ! I always thought Sketchup was useful for a quick block in but.... How did you manage to model stuff with it ? o_o
Thanks for the insights !

I just use some basic tools like circular shapes, push/pull, scale, etc. There's a ton of things you can do with vanilla SketchUp. :D

Oh ok I see, thanks, "Vanilla" ? You mean... You can do more with plugins in Sketchups as well ? Will you do some tuts on 3D as well (just by curiosity ^^)

Yeah! There's a ton of SketchUp plugins.
I only use 3D as a guide for my 2D artworks. So I'm not really an expert on it. ^-^;
You can learn a lot just by tinkering SketchUp, that I guarantee you. :D

Oooh ok thank you !!

Wow! nice work. I'm tempted to learn this. . thanks for the tutorial.

It's super easy. :)
Thanks!

you are welcome :)

awesome work mate! Really enjoy your stereoscopic work as well. really cool!

Thanks @yogjoshi! I'd really really love to see even just one stereoscopic piece from you. You make amazing BGs!

wow, another awesome work from you dude ^^ @lires

Thanks a lot, @aranda! xD
