My Actifit Report Card: August 25 2019
I mentioned in an earlier post that the local government planned to close one lane of Session Road. They did not follow the original plan. It finally came true last week so I made it a point to check it out today.
Plus, one reason I intended to come here is because of the Mindanao Fruit Festival.
They only closed one lane of this major road for pedestrians to be encouraged to walk more and stroll Session Road. This is an experiment for six months. I personally wanted it to be permanent. It is just for one day a week anyway.
So, I thought of taking a photo of the road from a higher vantage point. However, this is before 7 a.m. So, it is given that there were only a few cars.
It was also a good day today for the rain was kept at bay. It was a cloudy morning but it turned out better as the day progressed.
A quick background of Session Road.
Session Road got it's name from the fact that this road leads to the old Baden Powell Inn where the Philippine Commission held its first session in Baguio City.
Session Road is nearly 2 kms of shops, restaurants, cafes and other business establishments and is a major road of Baguio City.
Sadly, the old Baden Powell Inn is crumbling and the marker seems to be given no importance.
This can be found at what is now Governor Pack Road. Other establishments hide this from view.
A few days ago, a facebook post started circulating informing that there will be a fruit festival of sort bringing to the city fruits that Mindanao is famous for - Durian and Marang - that many grew to love.
I readied myself and my nose especially to the smell of Durian - the king of fruits. I have to admit I am not a fan of it.
So, while I am still far from Session Road, I was sniffing for that smell. Only when I am a few steps from it, almost about to turn a corner to reach the road did the odor hit me and my nose was invaded by the pervasing smell.
Coming down from the road is this cart of Durian being pulled by a porter.
It was announced that the event will start at 6:00 but it was past that when I was there. I thought there were only a few people but I was surprised by the number who showed up this early.
Products were still being unloaded yet buyers were impatient and demanding and the vendors so not know what to do. I believe they were relying on the instructions given them while the buyers were relying on the social media post.
Stalls were not even filled yet.
People were already eager to buy and go home. Stocks were limited but the demand is high so many went home disappointed. Also, some fruits perished along the way.
This is the first time this event was held in the city. I think it is a learning experience for the city government so they can better accommodate and facilitate and manage the event better.
The prices were cheaper than the value in our markets so this is a good deal. Lucky to those who were able to buy some.
I wanted to stay longer but my nose is pulling me away from the place.
Here are side scenes I took.
Rollups of stores painted by artists.
Baguio Cathedral is another famous structure within the city. I took this when I went up the rooftop of Porta Vaga to take a photo of Session Road.
After my session at Session Road, I went down to Burnham Park for more walk.
