This same day today last year my mom had her very first stroke. I can't forget that day when my daughter woke us up just after midnight because of my mom's slur speech. She just came from the restroom and we were asking her questions if she recognized us but things happened so fast it's like she is eating her tongue when she speaks and she lost her balanced. We then immediately brought her to a hospital. We're living in the suburb of Rizal and the only nearest hospital advised us to bring her to a big hospital in the Metro because she needs a ventilator. We then brought to Philippine Heart Center which was an hour drive from our place. She was immediately attended by doctors and nurses and she was attached to a ventilator to help her breathe, unfortunately, she never recovered she died after 3 weeks after she suffered another fatal stroke and she also had an internal hemorrhage.

What is a stroke? What leads to a stroke?

There are so many things that we need to know about stroke. A stroke may be caused by a blocked artery called ischemic stroke or the leaking or bursting of a blood vessel called a hemorrhagic stroke. A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted or reduced, which deprives the brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die the reason why my mom's deterioration was so fast she had an ischemic stroke.

I am not an expert on this but there are some basic things that we need to be aware of in case someone we know experienced or has symptoms of stroke. Both my parents were hypertensive and my mom had a heart problem as well that's why I did research on the signs and symptoms, and the first aid that I need to do just in case. My father had several episodes of stroke symptoms that we were able to use helpful first aids that had prevented a fatal stroke.

Both of my parents died of stroke and I know awareness of what stroke is, its signs and symptoms and what to do in case of emergency are very important to everyone.

It is often best if we know these symptoms because we can easily call assistance from our local health centers for an ambulance or we can call 911. There are always other websites about stroke that you can check.

It is always best to have regular check-ups with our doctors and make sure to drink your medicine regularly. Prevention is always better than cure.

Stroke maybe an irreversible disease, we must also know its prevention.
