The day I drove the World -

in #travel7 years ago

One year ago today I was lucky enough to be abroad a cruise ship called The World.

This ship is different from any other cruise ship out there, and at the moment it is the only one in existence. Although from the outside it looks remarkably like a cruse ship it is not, they call it a Luxury Residence At Sea. People buy their apartments on board and they live there, they are like locals who come and go as they please.

The World lets you dig deeper with your travels, it goes around the world and stops in different ports for days at a time. Spending multiple days in port really allows you to explore the city and get to know the area unlike typical cruise lines who usually only do 4-12 hour stops at each destination. Some of The Worlds ports are also far more private and exotic than a standard cruise ships ports. I will write about some of the unbelievable ports we stopped in during my time aboard on a future post.

What they don't have is the entertainment that a normal cruise line has, there is no casino upstairs, no dancers or magician on board, no disco ect... They do have a pool and a piano bar as well as a few delicious restaurants but it is definitely not the same atmosphere as say a Carnival or Holland America cruise would be.

In fact the ship only has 165 residents and guests and who are never all abroad at one time but who all more or less know each other. The ship will host parties for the residence during special occasions and holidays so they can all get together and fraternize. The residents also get to know each other when they venture off the ship during different excursions while in port.

Did you know that the Captain's job is not to drive the ship??

News to me!

I was shocked by this news as I had always understood that the captain drove the ship but this is simply not the case, The Captain is in charge of so much more. The Staff Captain is in charge of the bridge and he is the one who drives the actual ship (well himself and his officers). The Captain is in charge of making sure everything on the ship is running correctly, he is the big boss and the heads of each department report to him.

So there you have it, the captain of a ship does way more than simply drive a boat. He is the over seeing eye of everything that happens on the ship, he plans the course of the ship and makes sure everything is executed to a tee, unless his name Francesco Schettino.

Too soon?

Yah the ship is really cool, I had quite the adventure!

That is freakin awesome!

This totally sounds like the cruise for me!

Yah it is amazing!!
The only down side is buying the place and I hear the strata is around 20k/month!

Kinda Steep lol. I would love to cruise and dock for couple days in places all over the world though. Tight :)

I know thats exactly what I was thinking!!
It was really cool, basically a mobile hotel that stayed in a city for 3-4 days on average. Plus you got to keep your same hotel room in the next city so you didn't have to pack up all your stuff and move, it just moved with you!
The World has gone places that most people will never go.
They did the Northwestern Passage in the Arctic last year which is not a very well travelled route.
At the beginning of this year they went to East Antarctica and actually got off the ship and took zodiacs to shore (hardly anyone visits East Antarctica). Their expedition on shore included spending the day with the massive Emperor Penguins which would be so cool! They also did freezing cold ice dips where residence jumped off the back of the ship into the frigid Arctic waters.
When I was on board we rented an island for a day in the Maldives. We snorkelled with sea life and sailed catamarans by day and then had a huge island party with seafood buffet, drinks, fires and a band by night! It was amazing!
But yes the strata is a bit much for most of the population, it was likely a once in a lifetime trip for me!

that is absolutely amazing! I love it!

Looks like I have a lot more money to make lol
