Christmas Flaky Pastry Stars

in #food8 years ago (edited)

One of the appetizers we had at Christmas was these lovely looking and delicious tasting flaky pastry stars.

I made these. Oh yeah, that's right ;)

Unfortunately, they are a bit of a pain to make because they take time. I'll explain why.

First, cutting the pastry sheets into the star shape is easy, sure. Nothing to it. but the star shapes were a bit narrow. This made the arms of the stars a little small and not optimal for fitting filling there. The original recipe had wider star arms to fit more filling in.

The first one I did I only put the filling in the middle, then I realized that it was just too little. So I started to put the filling into the arms. But they are so thin! It takes time to do, and there isn't much space to work with.

The filling is made mainly of sweet potatoes and chestnuts (so good). I forget the other things other than onions. I'm at work right now ;)

You can see how the other 3 had filling in the arms, while the first one in the middle right is only in the middle.

They are worth it in the end though.

I was busy making other food when my mother and aunt arrived. Before cooking those 4, I made 4 more so that we would have 2 each. I didn't have another spare tray to work with at the time, as they were being used with for other food. So I had to cook 4 at a time for 10 minutes each.

The flaky pastry filled with yummy goodness is a nice treat, but takes long to make if your filling the arm which are thin. I made 8 more last night for me and my partner's lunch today. They were bulging with filling lol. More goodness to eat. It took a while again lol. No more to make, until next time ;)

Thanks for reading/viewing. Merry Christmas.

Seriously, is there anything you can't do? I mean, how do you make time for all this, and still sleep?

Haha, surely a lot! It's been pretty busy of late. My new job for two weeks replacing someone is far away, I get up at 5:45 am, and I'm pretty tired, then cook and stuff. Yesterday, no coding. I sleep about 6h heh :/

Impressive! I would probably burn out on day 3. ;P

We make those, too. We fill them with plum jam and leave them open in the middle.

Cool, so like a donut hole in the middle?

You could say so except there is a bottom on which there is jam. No cover on the filling like in yours.

Here's a wikipedia article on them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joulutorttu

Wow!!Looking very easy to made.
But I know my ability, I will do it all messy.
It's a great still to be able to make good food.
