Let's Play - Impossible Soaring - A Game Review

in #gaming6 years ago

Today we are going to take a look at Impossible Soaring. This single-developer flying game promises the feeling of intense speed as you soar through the sky dodging obstacles trying to achieve the highest scores. Whether it can deliver on this promise is the question we will try to answer today. Impossible Soaring is available on Steam for 3 Euros and 99 cents or your regional equivalent.

Text Review

Sometimes I feel that only games that have either AAA graphics, look sort of retro, or have a unique graphics style are games that get attention. But there is a giant market of games that are created by people who have a good idea but do not have the money to pay for great graphics. Usually, these games are just sort of out there and they never really get a chance to shine. So let us break the vicious cycle and give Impossible Soaring a chance to shine.

Gameplay

And, without any further ado lets start the review by looking at the most important part of any game – how it plays.

I gotta say, I was so immensely surprised by Impossible Soaring. At first glance, it looks like it is going to be just a random game made by someone in Unity using free assets – like someone's school project. And let's face it, such games tend not to be good. But straight of the bat – Impossible Soaring is fun.

It is not a complex game. Nor is it competitive really. In the end, it plays like a casual game you start whenever you have just a few minutes, you want to play something but you do not have that much time to play something bigger.

So what is Impossible Soaring about? About flying. Flying around trying to accumulate as many points as you can within a span of three minutes. And in the end, sometimes less is better than more. The way you get the points is almost ridiculously simple – fly close to things. Whether it means flying close to the ground, flying through windows or giant pipes – it doesn't matter – just fly as close to them as you can at the highest speed you can achieve. The longer you can do it, ideally, fly near many different things in a row – the higher your score will be. This isn't the only mode available though, there is one more. In the second mode, you get a bunch of balloons spawned on a map and you have to pop them all.

This on itself probably doesn't sound very exciting. And that is understandable. On itself, it isn't that exciting. Whether it is fun depends on the most important thing – is the flying fun?

And yes, yes it is. The flying again isn't very complex, there aren't tons of buttons that you can push – essentially you just jump down, get a bit of speed and you are flying. Just turn, fly close to things to gain speed and enjoy the ride is the essence of the game. One thing needs to be pointed out though – this is the kind of a game that is about a billion times better on a controller – having analog controls for flight is just so much more precise so if you are going to play Impossible Soaring then definitely use a controller.

What is interesting is the fact that Impossible Soaring boasts itself as a difficult game. And to a degree it is true. Getting used to the control scheme takes a while and before you get used to it the game is hard. But once you get used to them, the flying itself just gets chill. And that is how I would describe Impossible Soaring as an experience. Chill. If you just want to chill while soaring through buildings, trees, giant corals, etc. etc. etc. then Impossible Soaring is really fun.

Apart from the flying itself, Impossible Soaring doesn't provide much. It has a little progression system where you can buy skills like being able to fly faster (or slower), additional speed gain from flying close to objects, etc. etc. but because you can have only a single one of these skills equipped at any given time these do not impact the gameplay by that much.

So the question becomes something simple – do you want just a simple game? A game that doesn't require you to learn it for hours and hours without end just to learn its core mechanics but instead provides you with a nearly instantaneous feeling of fun and relaxation.

Graphics

Nonetheless, whether I, you, or anyone else like it – graphics does play a role when deciding whether you will want to play a game. And we have to face the fact that the impact of graphics on buyers' choice is – actually – quite large. So how does Impossible Soaring fare in the graphics department?

As you can see from the video, its not great. The game doesn't have high polygon counts. It doesn't use the newest technologies like RTX or anything. But… it doesn't look bad per se. It doesn't look amazing, great or even good either though. It is a game that looks plain.

The reasons why are fairly obvious – money. The developer – and remember this game was developed by a single guy – obviously isn't a graphical designer and he does not have the money to pay for one either.

But do not let that distract you from the fact that Impossible Soaring is fun. Just understand that it will not look like a AAA game.

Music

There is one more thing apart from graphics that can build atmosphere and in games that aren't amazing graphically, it plays a role that is even more important. The music.

The music of Impossible Soaring is probably the thing that makes you feel like you are just chilling out the most. And the fact that the music is taken under free licenses from a few creators just shows that you do not need to spend a lot of money on the makings of a game – just pick well and it can work well.

Thus, if it wasn't clear already – I rather enjoyed the music of Impossible Soaring – mainly because I felt it fits the tone of the game perfectly.

Performance

And before we end the review in a conclusion we have to take a look at something that can break a game and has broken many games in the past. The performance. And I am happy to report that in this department Impossible Soaring functions well. There were no crashes, no weird bugs nothing that would cause me to be angry with the game.

Conclusion

So… in conclusion: Impossible Soaring is a game I am more than glad to recommend. It may sound weird. It's not a game that you will play for hours without end. It's not a game that you will play often. It's not even a great game altogether. But it has something important. Fun. Fun at a good price. The four bucks the author is asking for is well priced and if you want a game that you can play whenever you have 10 minutes and you just want to fly around and chill – Impossible Soaring will always be there for you, your kids or anyone who feels like it.
