“ Setsubun-Bean Throwing Ceremony”

I did a Setsubun-Bean Throwing Ceremony Japanese lesson today because February the 3rd was the Setsubun day for this year in Japan. The day before the season changes is called Setsubun. The Setsubun date is sometimes changeable. Setsubun means the day before the beginning of spring. Literally, today was pretty warm and sunny even though it's still pretty chilly. On Setsubun, people through beans (Mame- Maki) and say “Oni wa soto, Fuku wa uchi!” which means ”demons are out, good luck stays inside.” My students hesitated to throw beans at first and then they enjoyed it.

Oni means devil or Japanese ogre. In Japan, there are many folk tales about Oni. I attached the image of Oni below. They look pretty scary, especially for children. Nowadays, “Demon Slayer- Kimetsu no Yaiba” comic is popular in Japan so I included it for my Setsubun lesson.

“節分”

2月3日は節分の日だったので、今日は節分にちなんだ日本語レッスンにしました。少し寒さも和らぎ太陽も出てきて、文字通り節分らしい日でしたが、まだやはり肌寒いです。鬼はそと、福はうち！生徒さんたちは豆を投げることを初めのうちは躊躇していましたが、そのうち楽しんでいました。

日本ではさまざまな昔話に鬼が登場しますね。鬼の画像を下に貼りましたが、子どもたちにとってはけっこう怖いですよね。鬼滅の刃が流行っているようなので、節分レッスンにもおりこんでみました。
